I am writing for my daughter Maegan. She is 6 yrs old and is 4'1" and weighs 77 lbs. I always thought she was just a "big" girl, but now I realize that she is overweight. About 1 1/2 wks ago, I started limiting her food portions and bought all healthly low fat foods. We also started exersizing everydday for at least 30 minutes. She is trying so hard but she hasnt lost an ounce and it is discouraging her! She get on the scale and it still say 77, and she cries! what should I do!
Reply from Sabrina, Age 12 - 05/11/04 - IP#: 4.140.66.xxx I know i may be young to reply but i will anyway. You see 6 is young and most children still hav baby fat when she gets taller she will most likly loose it and keeping your child on such a strik diet may make her feel depressed and 4'1 77 is not extremly overweight and like i said it is probably baby fat

Reply from Maree, Age 35 - 10/25/02 - IP#: 203.220.192.xxx Hi Donna, I have replied to a couple of kids at the top of the page. Mina, Raven and Verinica Sue. You can read them to get some ideas. I came across this web site accidentally {it you believe in accidents}, and I am blown away by the amount of kids concerned about their weight. I want to know if this is a sales scam....... I hope I can be of assistance with what I have learnt. One of the biggest reasons children put on so much weight can be from an emotional issue. You need to talk it out. Meagan needs to have complete trust in you before she can express her issues. If she has, that's half the battle won. Talk to her. Put aside times for special 'talking time' with her. If she feels good in her heart, she will loose the weight. It is only natural. Fat is a barrier from the outside world. What is she trying to protect herself from? Maybe her heart has been hurt. It is really common, as you most probably remember. There has to be balance in Reagans life in all areas. Her physical life, {exercise}, emotional life, {expressing and communicating}, physical touch, {hugs and stroking}, and good nutrition. Love is the biggest and most powerful tool you can share with her. It does move mountains. We all have different love languages. There is a book out about the '5 different love languages'. If you see it, buy it. It's a magic tool. There's heaps and heaps of information out there. But just talking with love alone is, I believe, the most accessable and powerful tool of all. Good luck, Maree.
Reply from Amy, Age 24 - 07/22/02 - IP#: 205.188.208.xxx Donna,My daughter will be 6 in oct. and she weighs about 88 lbs. and is about 4'3. I really haven't found anything that works yet but it is so frustrating trying to get clothes to fit her (and look good) and making her eat less. It seems every 1/2 hour she is nagging me about something to eat. I am a very healthy eater and very thin but I work on it so we don't have alot of fatty food in the house. Mostly fat free and I still haven't seen alot of results. She is in t-ball and swims twice a week. In fact, today I called a dietician. I don't want to give her a complex but she goes to kindergarden this fall and I know as well as you that kids are very mean. My family really is no help. They keep saying that she will grow out of it but I know at this rate that it is a problem and I really get no support. I'm desperate for some answers also.

Reply from Tara, Age 28 - 06/26/02 - IP#: 12.225.44.xxx hi, my 6 1/2 year old is exactly the same. 4'1" and 77 lbs. did you find anything out? i took my daughter to the doctor and she said she is not very overweight but real stocky. and muscle weighs more than fat. what seems to work a little for us is no butter on things such as waffles, pancakes, toast etc. no mayo on sandwiches, lots and lots of fruit. and instead of a 2nd helping for dinner i just give a tiny bit more.
Reply from Dani, Age 17 - 06/20/02 - IP#: 24.169.204.xxx Plus she won't loose weight in a week she is a baby and her body hasn't regulated its' self yet to it can balance food intake. Healthy dieting take a logn tiem for everyone!
Reply from Dani, Age 17 - 06/20/02 - IP#: 24.169.204.xxx She's onyl 6 years old...she has baby fat she is still considered a baby, it is good you are excerizing to get her to understand a healthy lifestyle, watch what she eats, just limit the junk food. Always complement her and dont' have her stand on a scale all the time. Just tell ehr to keep her head up and to stay happy!
Reply from Maura, Age 34 - 06/03/02 - IP#: 24.28.145.xxx Donna, My daughter is 5 years old and is 4'1 @ 75lbs, I totally understand your feelings, Her doctor suggested to us about going to the local hospital and they have a program that teaches children about eating, and exercise. We have not started since there is a waiting list, but right now our goal is to maintain the current weight. my email is tilton36@hotmail.com
Reply from Sara, Age 15 - 06/03/02 - IP#: 152.163.188.xxx Hi Donna. Youre daughter sounds like me at my age. What my mother did was she enrolled me in this class for kids 5-10 at this fitness place. They would give us an exercise plan, tell us what to eat, and they would show us the best exercises to do and much more. Unfortunately that was about 9 yrs ago and i cant remember the name of them. But i suggest trying to find a simular one in your town or maybe asking her doctor/pediatrician what might help. But since shes so little i wouldnt be worried. lots a little kids are a kinda big when they are little but when they hit puberty they thin out. email me at sara729870@aol.com and tell me how maegan is doing! good luck!!! Sara
Reply from Christine, Age 18 - 05/22/02 - IP#: 216.209.63.xxx Sometimes the best thing to do for children, especially very young ones, is to maintain their weight since they will grow taller and eventually balance out to a healthy weight. It helps to avoid vitamin and mineral defiencies, stunted growth, etc. If the portions are cut, the food is healthy, and exercise is added to that, I would say that is as good as it gets. However, if her weight increases even with these measures, consider seeing a doctor about possible underlying causes such as a hormonal imbalance.

Reply from Holly, Age 17 - 05/21/02 - IP#: 64.12.106.xxx Hi, Donna
Okay... first off... what kind of lowfat foods are you buying? There's a ton of stuff out there that can fool you by saying it's lowfat.... but really.. all it has in it is sugar and too much processed junk that really won't do any good for your body.. especially for a growing girl's body. Also... with the limiting... are you making sure she's getting all of the necessary vitamins she needs? I know that I was having a really hard time losing weight at one point because I wasn't getting the vitamins that allowed me to lose weight.
Another thing could be... is she getting too many carbohydrates? If so... I suggest trying to stay away from bread... or at least get her off white bread. Some bodies cling to processed carbs.... mine is like that.. so I only allow myself a little bread, if I want it, on weekends. And my dad makes the bread too.... really really healthy. So maybe making bread could be a fun thing to do on weekends with your daughter? I dunno.. just a suggestion =)
If you want anymore help or anything... I would be really happy to help you. ^^ I hope maybe this can help your daughter a little.
