That's really interesting, Ressa. Thanks for sharing that stuff and cleaning up this whole starving issue even further. Indeed, I will not bore you with the details, but I have had experiances in these matters of being starved myself; NOT pleasent. And Sarah, I know you were just sharing a few facts, but they were mostly incorrect...And promoted the belief of a dangerous method of weight loss. Oh yes I would like to add a few facts myself on the issue: Fasting can cause heart problems, such as irregular beating. You can hallucinate and have pain. This can lead to shock and seizures if bad enough. You feel weak and tired. I know this as one of my friends is Muslim and, according to his religion, must fast for about a month, and another friend of mine was so ill he couldn't eat for a week. And you are more likely to gain the weight back even if it wasn't completely stored as fat-you would just resume your normal eating habits and activities and gain it back anyway. And wouldn't you rather lose weight and look muscular and athletic by losing the weight by excersising than by losing it unhealthily and looking ill?^_^

Okay guys....I used to be anoerxic too (and bulimic for that matter, but that's a different story...) and the whole starving yourself/gaining weight thing is true. The first time you do it, your body will accept it and you'll lose weight. HOWEVER, you can't do use it as a short term weight loss plan, and then start eating again once you lose the weight. Also, when you do start eating again, slowly raising your calorie intake won't help either, because no matter how gradual it is, it will all be stored as fat. It's a nutritional fact that after 5 hours without food, enzymes that store fat will start to grow and strengthen and multiply. They eventually become like a big army, and absolutely everything that enters your body will be stored as fat. Even water helps the lipid bonds (aka. fat cells) strengthen. Since your body thinks that you are actually in significant danger (stranded in a forest without food or something along those lines), it stores fat to keep you alive, as if you were going into hibernation; eventually your body will slow down and you will only be able to sleep, when your body will FINALLY take a stab at your fat stores to keep you going, since you've physically stopped. Now once these fat bonds are strong, your enzymes are working hard at storing fat, and your energy level is down, it becomes nearly impossible to actually lose any weight, even by exercising. Adrenaline and negative motivation can keep you going for awhile, but it REALLY is not a good long term alternative. Rather than trying to be waif thin, try to be leaner...do weight bearing exercises like lifting weights, situps, pushups...not excessively, but a decent amount. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn, just by sitting there. Someone with a lot of muscle can sit on a couch watching TV and burn 5 times more calories than someone who is as skinny as a stick with no muscle and is sitting on a couch watching TV. So Sarah, THAT is what all the talk is about with people gaining weight when they starve themselves, and I hope you guys are all a little bit more informed now. Also, please take what I'm saying seriously, I was hospitalized 3 times for my eating disorders and I'm in therapy...it's SO not worth it for a few pounds. All of this info came straight from a nutritionist, so it's 100% true and trustworthy

I don't really know what all the talk is about gaining weight when you starve yourself. You will lose weight since the body doesn't get enough calories. And those who think you're gonna gain weight when you stop starving yourself are wrong, you don't have to gain weight. You just have to raise your calorie intake slowly. There is a risk of eating a lot since you haven't eaten for some time, but if you don't eat a lot you're gonna keep the weight off.
The reason I know this is because I used to be anorexic, before getting help.
I'm not trying to tell anyone that they should starve theirselves, I just wanted to share some facts, and maybe help those who have starved themself to start eating normally without gaining weight(if it's not neccessary).

Go with Heather. Starving yourself, or fasting, really does cause mental and pyschical problems. Ironically, if you eat less than 1,200 calories a day, your body goes into "starvation mode" as its called and it makes you lose weight VERY, VERY, SLOWLY...And any food you eat in starvation mode will almost compleetely be stored as fat. It seems like fasting would be an easy way to lose weight, but its really not. It can even mess up your heart and other organs. Don't try it. ^_^

DO NOT STARVE URSELF. i did, it really screws w/ ur mind AND ur body. i starved myself for 7 months and ya i lost SOME weight but not as much as i wanted to. anyways, as soon as i stopped starving myself i gained three times as much weight back. my friends actually had to force feed me at one point. nevr starve urself. trust me.
