My daughter is obese. I'm considering telling her I want to send her to a boarding school that specializes in "healthy living" -- teaching her the habits she'll need to be healthy (and lose weight). Before I do, I'd like your opinion: How would you react? Would you want to go to a school like this?

Reply from Colleen, Age 15 - 12/13/03 - IP#: 66.24.239.xxx Hmm I Really Don't Know How I Would React...I Would Probably Be Happy Because I Would Like To Get Thinner And Healthier...But On The Other Hand...I Would Probably Be Really Mad That I Would Have To Go To A Boarding School...Maybe She Could See A Doctor Or Read Some Stuff On The Internet, Or Get Books From The Library.

Reply from Brittany, Age 13 - 12/12/03 - IP#: 205.188.209.xxx I'm not really that overweight, but I don't think I'd like it very much if my parents sent me there, but if I was obese, I don't think I'd be upset if they asked me if I'd like to go. You should ask your daughter if she would want to go, explain why you want her to go and that it would be good for her health, and then see if she is willing to go.

Reply from Emily, Age 17 - 12/12/03 - IP#: 68.90.18.xxx John, My dad is very concerned and has been about my weight for as long as i can remember. I struggle everyday with terrible awful thoughts about how terribly fat i am. I've even turned to bulimia, and laxatives at one point. He used to sit me down with my mom and turn me into a big crying fest. he would tell me that he was telling me to lose weight because he loved me, but all i heard was "you're fat and i won't love you if you are" My suggestion? don't send her away! that's the last thing she needs. What she needs is for you to just love on her. make sure you never go a day without hugging her. If you really are concerned about her weight. Ask her what she think about it (in a tactful way of course) Ask her how others treat her because of it. if you want to have contrl over what she eats. don't buy any junkfood. make sure your house is junkfood free. Go on walks with her. Talk with her. But don't make your relationship revolve around her weight. That's the last thing she needs. Little girls get dressed up in their mothers stuff just to hear someone say you're beautiful. That's what she needs she needs to know that you think she beautiful, inside and outside. This is how i wish my dad would have done it. as it is i now have psycoogical problems becuase of how he handled it. I do admit that he loves me but i don't believe all the time. Make sure that you make it clear that you love your daughter no matter what happens, and no matter what she looks like. -Emily a 17yr old
Reply from Molly, Age 18 - 12/12/03 - IP#: 82.33.41.xxx Hiyas. Its nice to see you are concerned about your daughter, but I dont think sending her away to school is the answer. You have to see the reasons for why she is over eating. Find out if she is unhappy about something and more than anything ill guess that she needs your support. I wouldnt want my parents to send me away. You could ask her how she would feel about it. But taking her away from her family and friends might not be the answer. Just see a family doctor who might reccomend a dietrition and then just help her by stocking healthy foods in your house. All go on a diet maybe? If you only provide healthy foods she will eat those foods. And also maybe walk with her to start some gentle excersises.
