for those of you who said cheerleading wasnt a sport obviously dont know my coach or my school...we run 2 miles a day and run stairs and are timed...our 1st mile has to be under 7 minutes and we arent aloud to walk any of it, we do 12 min abs everyday and tumble...our lowest tumbling skill is a roundoff back handspring and the coach that i have has won nationals and gotton high point and 1st place at every competition....no one on the squad is fat or even chubby...im 140 lbs and am 5'6 but my chest is 36 my waist is 27.5 and my hips/butt is 37...i dont think people should say its not a sport if they cant do ANY of the stuff we do...

Reply from Mandy, Age 17 - 11/23/04 - IP#: 205.188.116.xxx I would definetley say cheerleading is a sport.. running, building muscle, flexability... plus i mean chearleaders (highly commited ones) are usually in wicked great shape they have to be able to lift people completley over their heads and have to be much more flexible... i mean the only thing thats missing is hitting a baseball... all sports are different but its still a sport... thats like saying gymnastics isnt a sport.. yet its in the olympics...hmmmm....
Reply from Grace, Age 15 - 11/23/04 - IP#: 24.62.180.xxx The definition of a sport varies... but my opinion is this: cheerleading has only recently become a sport when competitions started happening. It is just as much of a sport as golf or tennis is... because all three of them require less running than the common sports. Cheerleaders would be able to do a TON more gymnastics than a soccor/basketball/baseball player, but would completely, totally, and utterly lose a race of either speed or endurance, because that it what those athletes use. Also, cheerleading does not require any aim or much hand-eye coordination, but much more flexibility. They both can be technically termed a "sport"... but in the common sense of the word (meaning: an active, point-scoring game), then it isn't one.
Reply from Antoinette, Age 15 - 11/23/04 - IP#: 64.12.116.xxx If you are active, its a sport. Because if it wasnt a sport, they wouldnt get starter jackets.
