Reply from anne, Age 18 - 02/05/05 - IP#: 216.66.96.xxx calories mark the amount of energy put into food. carbs and protien have less calories than fat(which is why low-fat diets work). packaged foods have calories per serving listed in the nutrition facts. for other foods there are sites that tell you how much such as www.caloriesperhour.com and www.calorieking.com. a pound of fat has 3500 calories in it. so, to lose a pound you need to burn 3500 calories more than what you consume in calories. this doesn't mean only eat 100 calories and that you'll have to workout all day to burn it all off because even when you're not exersizing, your metabolism is still going and you're burning calories just staying alive. for instance, i burn 2300-2500 calories throughout the day even without exersize, so if i eat about 500 less calories then what i burn i'll be losing 1lb a week. if i eat 1000 less then i'll be losing 2lbs, if i eat 500 less but exersize 500 off, i will still be losing 2lbs a week...the general rule is say you burn about 2000 calories a day and go from there- cut it back to 1500 that you eat- but don't go down past 1200 calories or you'll lose muscle mass instead of fat when your body goes into starvation mode and you need muscle to burn more calories!
