First let me say I am so glad I found this web site. My daughter is 86 lbs and is 43 inches tall. She is wearing a size 14 but I have to cut about a foot of material off the bottom which I dont mind but she is getting frustrated because she knows she has a big belly. She has stretch marks on her thighs and it just kills me because I know kids can be cruel and I want to get ahead of this before the teasing starts. Has anyone heard anything about the Atkins diet for kids? I know alot of people on it and have been successful losing weight. She is active she plays sports and is in dance class but cannot do a sit up to save her life. I try to give her all healthy stuff but the poor kid wants to eat a candy bar just like the other kids. Any suggestions?

We learned about carbohydrates in school this year and they are the main surce of energy for your body. the atkins probally wouldnt benefit a child because of all the fat. you could ask a dietician but i dont know what they would say.

All the stuff about the Atkins being bad for you is not true. I would recommend it. I am actually on it right now. My uncle did a study on it (he is a pediatrician (sp?)). He found it to be one of, if not the most, healthy diet for children and adults. He often has his patients do it. I would recommend this diet if your daughter like meat, cheese, etc! It might be tough the first few days as you wean her of of all the sugar, but it is definately good in the long run. Who knows, if she is like me, she will start of hating protein and then end up loving it! Remember that this is not just a quick fix, but this will teach her good habits for LIFE!
If you have any trouble getting her started, I would recommend doing it for a few days with her so that she sees that she (a) always has you there for her and (b) that she can make it through the first+ few days of cravings and getting into ketosis.
I HOPE I HELPED!

I understand where you are coming from! My husband and I have a blended family of 4 children. The youngest (his) is an 8-year-old girl who is 4 feet tall and now weighs in at 121 lbs. She averages a weight gain of 2 pounds every two weeks. The girl doesn't think she has a weight problem - eventhough we went shopping for Easter dresses this past weekend and had to buy a girls "pretty plus" 20 1/2 and yes, I too, will have to cut about a foot off the bottom. Her dad is so embarrassed about her weight that he is declining to go to the Father/Daughter dance this weekend. We keep only healthy, low-fat in the house, but how do we control what she eats the other 26 days a month she is not with us? As far as the candy bars...the miniature ones are a good treat...limit to two...I believe 3 Musketeers is the lowest in fat content.

Hey, no worries! I am only 4'10" as well, and I weigh 91 pounds, AND I wear a size 12. She will grow into her weight and slender up.

Don't put your child on the Atkin's diet. It can cause protein build-up in the liver which can result in damage or stones that will have to be surgically removed. You're daughter may turn out to be short. I am short. I only stand 4'10" and I have to cut off pants too. You could cut them off, hem them, and put cute little designs on them so she won't feel bad about being short.
