My daughter is 13 years old and about 5'1. She weighs about 135 at the most. She thinks she is overweight, but I don't know. She would really like to be 115 pounds before school starts, but she doesn't know how to lose the weight. She is a very picky eater, and during the summer, she gets so bored and all she does is eat.But it is very hard to lose the weight for her. She doesn't know what to do.

Reply from Jenn, Child's Age 13 - 08/19/05 - IP#: 65.78.103.xxx The average weight for a thirteen year old is 135. So she's not overweight. What I did to loose weight was only drink water instead of other drinks and eat a lot of salad and work out. I only eat when I'm hungry, too. Try to get her to do stuff so she's not bored, because I know a lot of people do eat when they're bored.

Reply from Marie - 07/28/05 - IP#: 198.182.163.xxx I too have a child who is 12, I have taught her that the word "diet" is not a good word and diet leads to failure, however teaching lifetime eating skills is key. Adopting these as a child will ensure a life of health, and happiness. Kids don't learn these lessons and they eat as they did as a child once becoming an adult and when most activity has slowed down and/or ceased to exist. This is why 7 out of 10 adults are overweight or obese. Eat to live don't live to eat.
Reply from Leah, Child's Age 11 - 07/25/05 - IP#: 64.173.21.xxx Keep in mind, if your child restricts her eating while she is still growing, she will not have the nutrients to grow and will end up at 5' 1''. I suggest waiting until she has reached her full adult height before going on a diet. In the meantime, just make sure to set a good example in health and encourage her to be healthy. As long as you are healthy, meaning eating well and getting enough exersize, it doesn't matter what weight you are, up to a certain point.
Reply from Marie - 07/25/05 - IP#: 198.182.163.xxx Her BMI is a little high @ 25.5, her goal could be 115 to 125. My guess is she eats while watching t.v and boredom. Try and encourage her to only eat at the table with zero distractions....this makes your purpose of eating just fuel vs. entertainment. Limit t.v to 2hrs day and walk with her even at the mall. I would not limit calories below 1500 at her age or any for that matter. reasonably she can lose 2lbs a week and you will find just 5 pounds will encourage her. Remind her that weight loss is for health and not to compare her body to others hers is unique and made especially for her.
Reply from rob - 07/22/05 - IP#: 67.38.255.xxx I'm sure she does know, what you need do is eat less and exercise more. If you eat 1500 calories or less each day, and do at least one hour of moderate exercise of any kind you choose, you will lose weight.
