Ok, my son had his appointment with pediatric GI and the preliminary dx is 'Fatty Liver' he has to have more blood tests done and a renal ultra sound to confirm this diagnosis. I am told to watch what he eats and put him on a low fat diet. What is a low fat diet for a 4 year old. how many grams of fat should we limit him to, this dr wasn't sure. it is very hard but i think if we stick to our guns he will do ok at the dinner table. he cries and gets very very upset when told no to certain foods, yesterday I cleaned out the pantry - if its not here he can't eat it! any word of encouragement or advice anyone?? thank you

I would suggest you go to a dietician. Your son is a growing boy and they will help you and teach you what to feed your child. My step-daughter is obese and I didn't know that at her weight, "fruit" is considered a desert. She is only suppose to have one desert per day, so if she chooses fruit, it is her one desert. She is also suppose to eat every 4 hours, so she has three snacks per day. The dietician said the snacks had to either be a protein, calcium, or a vegetable. So, they are very helpful when you have a little one that is growing and you don't want to hurt their growth! Goodluck!

Well, food can still be important to your son if he has a big appetite. Just read what Marie posted earlier and have your son fill up on healthy things like fruits and veggies. His big appetite may not change, but if he fills up on healthy low cal items, no problem. And you're smart to enroll him in karate. It's great exercise and being with the other kids will be good for him too.

My boy is now 71 lbs and 43 inches tall. I know his diet has been bad and I take responsibility for that but this boy is full of energy, always on the go, He NEVER slows down, why isn't he burning those calories? We recently enrolled him in Karate class 2 days per week, hopefully this will teach him discipline as well as physical fitness. I am worried and upset for him and will do what ever i can to help him I feel so quilty for allowing food to be so important to him. thanks

looks like fatty liver is a result of obesity not a result of a high fat diet...children and adults need around 30% of cal from fat but good fats like olive oil, nuts and seeds, avacado, not margarine and fats in meats. Good for you for cleaning everything out, just stay away from prepared foods and fast foods and increase your fruits and vegetables to 2 servings per meal..no butter or marg on the veg, and his weight will come down..how overweight is he?
