Reply from SARAH'S MOM, Child's Age 8 - 08/08/09 - IP#: 98.194.51.xxx Hi Chastity, My daughter is 8 and she is extremely tall and she is morbidly obese. She has complained of being very tired and complains of backaches, leg cramps and joint pain. Her pediatrician attributes it to "growing pains" some young children experience extreme pains as their bodies grow especially if they are prone to being overweight. My daughter loves food of any kind and she loves to try new foods from different cultures, so I think she gains weight because she has heightened taste buds, I know that sounds like a Mom making excuses for her child's bad eating habits. All we can do is encourage our children, let them help with picking out foods for us to try and trying to find recipes and inventive ways to get them up and moving and staying positive in the process. Good Luck and I hope this helps and encourages you.

Make sure you explain to her/him all your worries--perhaps before you go in to the examining room with your daughter. If the doctor finds nothing wrong, ask for a referral to a nutritionist. Also, just eating "healthier" and getting more exercise as a family will be good for everyone in your home--just walking together in the early evening is an example of what I mean. I bet your daughter will appreciate the time you and she have together doing this.
Reply from Veronica, Child's Age 16 - 08/07/09 - IP#: 93.138.50.xxx Maybe the Caps Lock button isnt working.Ok Chastity, have you checked your daughters portions?Even healthy food can make you gain weight if you eat too much. You said that her stomach is very big.Well is it big, round, firm like a pregnant belly? If so,it could be swollen.Maybe she has food allergies, lactose intolerance,IBS,intolarance to gluten so on.In that case she needs to go to the doctor ASAP cause that could be deadly. If her stomach is just flabby and has rolls, its just excess fat.Her stomach maybe hurts cause she eats too quickly and talks during meals, making her gassy(that can be very painfull). There is also a deseise called Polycistic Ovarien Syndrome, mostly happens in girls her age.It causes weight gain, mostly around stomach, delayed menarche, excess body hair etc.If thats the problem, take her to the doctor, she will get hormonal therapy(sadly, she will stay infertile for life)I dont mean to scare you,I hope its nothing that serious. But in summary, take her to the doctor. If she really has a healthy lifestyle, there isnt a reason for her to be so overweight. P.S.-Sorry for my bad spelling, english isnt my native language
