Hello, I am writing about two of my 3 sons,Adrian and Benjamin. Adrian, the oldest at 16, is 5 feet 9 inches tall. I'm not exactly sure of his weight but he is between 235 to 250 pounds, I think closer to 250. Adrian does not like to exercise and he gets winded after 5 mins of activity, especially during gym (2x week at school). He likes to snack (binge) on pizza after school, hiding it from me. He does this at least 4x a week, as I see him. (Bus home passes pizza place). Since the beginning of the year, he has put on about 15-20 pounds. All of his weight goes to his stomach and has a 54 inch stomach and a 45 inch waist. Wears a 44/34 or 46/34 and xxl shirts. In Jan, he wore xl shirts and 40/34 pants. Ben, who is 14.5 is short for his age at 5'3 and he weighs 175 pounds. He sits in his room and gorges on junk food. As his brother, he gets winded easily. He wears a size large shirt and 36/30 or 38/30 jeans. This weight gain is recent as in January (last physical) he was 155 and wore 34/30 jeans and med. shirts. They have not always been large. After the passing of my wife in Aug 2013, they have put on weight. I don't know how to properly address this, but this is getting out of hand fast. I spoke to Adrian in March about losing some weight and his response was "stop talking about it, I know I put on 10,or so pounds. I feel fine”. It's not 10 pounds. Nowhere near. I am very active and I would like my kids to lead an active lifestyle. Thank you.

Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Andrew just has a big appetite. He eats more than I do. Even more than his brothers and I've tried getting him to share but he won't I got them the first appointment I could which was in 3 weeks. Doctor is booked solid until then.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx I don't understand how a 12 year old can eat a full pie in one sitting. But I know its possible. Have you mentioned anything about the pizza? Ask him next time to share with his brothers. How far in time is the doctors appointment (a day, week, month)?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx By himself. I heard his brothers complaining about it. He just told them to go get their own.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx That doesn't sound good..... 4 full pies in a weekend. Is he sharing them with his brothers or is he eating them by himself?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Full pie.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Is it a smaller size pizza box (2-3 slices), or is it a full pie?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Good that you got them all to go. Is the visit soon? Please post stats when you get them.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I've managed to convince them to go to the doctors. Andrew was complaining about mild chest pain - asthma problems probably - and i convinced them that they all ought to go and make sure their inhalers were still the correct dose. I'm not going to try anything until after the visit. I've noticed this weekend that Andrew is having a friend deliver pizza to him. 4 times this weekend I opened the front door to find him standing there with a pizza box asking to go and see Andrew. Not sure if this is a new thing or not.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx I am trying to do this with mine, they have rationed out the snacks after they got the point that I am only buying x amount of junk per week.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Your two oldest sons are at least 75 (more like 100) pounds overweight. That is excessive in my opinion. With the junk food, try and reduce the amount of it coming through the house. If you buy 4 bkxes of cookies a week, next time buy 2. Also, tell them that it is not healthy to be eating all the time and they need more fruit. Don't mention anything about weight, diet, exercise. Maybe institute a plan where you eat a piece of fruit before the snack. Or if they are still hungry after dinner tell them to wait an hour and still see if they are hungry
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/30/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I hate cooking and am glad to not have to do it anymore. As for their weights my boys are not unhealthy nor is their weight even approaching excessive. They may be a bit obese but that's all. I am going to try and curb their junk food intake, though i'm not really sure how.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 172.56.18.xxx You've said that after you moved that they've been eating more junk and you haven't cooked. Can you try and cook sometime? I am extremely busy and come home late but I am going to try and start cooking.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 172.56.18.xxx Have you thought about a "healthy lifestyle change" (quote from dietician), cooking at home, being physically active, eating less junk etc. But you say that you always see them with food in their hand, if they keep eating like that they'll be 300 pounds and out grow you by the end of the summer. I know that you say that you don't want to take the junk food away but the consequences of eating like that all day everyday will be that you gain excessive unhealthy weight quite fast. And 300 will come and be gone by then.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I asked simon if he wanted a weight set and he said he'd never use it.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Everytime i see them they have food in their hands.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 172.56.18.xxx I would say with Simon to start off light with the weights. Or use the milk. Eventually he will get used to the weight and will get stronger
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 172.56.18.xxx I would say Thompson is ranging around 200 and Andrew and Simon are around 250-275. Does your family eat often thought the day?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx There's no way they could be that big. Andrew is only 12 and he's the biggest. 12 year olds cannot be close to 300 lbs. I was hoping you were going to say they were less than 250 not more!
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/29/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Based on the picture, I would say that they are somewhere around 275, maybe pushing 300.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I could never deprive them of the food they love. They practically live for junk food! From that picture I told you about, does 250 seem a reasonable guess? I doubt I could get Simon to lift weights. He can barely manage the milk when we get the big ones. He isn't nervous about high school at all, he's looking forward to it. The only thing he was worried about when we've talked is that the cafeteria food won't be any good.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Well, that's where the weight gain is coming from. More access to food made the rapid weight gain. You need to cut down on the amount of junk food coming into your house. Not quit it cold turkey, but maybe only buy snacks once a week. I go to the bargain depot 50 miles away once a month and buy in bulk. If we run out of chips in a week, they just wait until I go back. Personally, I don't think that they will grow into to 250 pounds if they are that short unless they get my height (6'4). I would try to get them down to like 230. Do you think Simon would lift light weights? On the other hand, high school! Is he nervous? (I put two kids through the process and Ben is going to hs in September.) I used to be a elementary school Spanish and French teacher in Vancouver and the graduating class was always worried about high school.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Given that the oldest two are about 250lbs, do you think they will grow into their weights once they hit their growth spurts?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx My boys are all in middle school this year, though Simon goes to high school in September. Gym counts for them but they arent anywhere near making honor roll anyway.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx They never had access to as much food before the move and my wife and I used to cook all the time. They also seem to go through food much quicker than they used to. My wife tends to restock the cupboards every other day now. And they each have a big garbage bag filled with wrappers and fast food boxes and things like that every garbage day from their own rooms.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Does gym really count in your district? In my sons elementary school it really didn't count but now in high school it does and I get pissed at report time when they are not on honors because of gym… Have tried to negotiate with teachers lol.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx So I wonder what caused the rapid weight gain since the last checkup. See if Simon would lift light weights. Muscle build is good and reduces body fat. Don't try it with the others, they are still in puberty and the results on Andrew and Thompson can be bad.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I'm 5'7 and my wife is 5'1. None of the boys have had a growth spurt yet. I dont think my boys took the move all that hard. They made friends easily and seem to be doing good. They get reasonable marks except for in gym.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Did Simon get his growth spurt yet? How tall is your wife. I don't know why Benji is so short, I am 6'4 and his mum was 6'0. It seems like most of your sons weight gain was after you moved. Did they take it hard? I know my sons took it hard and put on a bit of weight when we moved from Vancouver.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I dont know. I'm just trying to be optimistic. Maybe they will grow into their weights a bit and it wont be such an issue.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Angus, excuse me if I come off as a bit rude-ish (really don't mean it), but if your sons are sitting inside all day eating a ton of food and not being active, how do you expect them to lose weight? This is my problem with my sons. They will sit up in their room or in the den and eat junk. That's why I tag them along to do my work in the city, I walk everywhere and they don't see it as exercise.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I want them to lose weight. I dont think they'll gain much over the summer, they might even lose a few pounds.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx I know the wheelchair thing is not the nicest thing to do..... but they won't say no to that and they end up having a good time at the mall. So for me its a win-win. Get some exercise and have some fun
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Are you fine with them being the size they are and most likely gaining weight over the summer (no school- they will stay inside and eat more.)?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Yeah they never leave the house unless we are going out as a family or they have school. I dont force them to exercise. I know they wouldnt enjoy it.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Do your sons stay inside all day? Mine will try but I sit in the wheelchair and tell them that I need to get to the mall ~about a mile away~ but I am too weak to push myself. (Note- if I really am weak, I'm not going to the mall). They get mad but eventually push me to the mall. They are tired like they ran a marathon when the get there.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Adrian and Benny are not active in the house. There are stairs in my house and Adrian is usually extremely out of breath after climbing the one flight of stairs. I have a chair lift that I use ( spinal cord injury- was in wheelchair for 6mos), I dont allow them to use it but I know they do. Adrian is often out of breath walking from the bus stop about a block away from house and is extremely out of breath for the 2 block walk from bus to school.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx They all hate sports and I can't blame them. I didnt like them when I was their age and I still don't like them now. They've never once shown any interest in sports, not even sitting and watching them.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Have you thought about putting your sons in some kind of sports program (football, baseball, soccer, basketball, etc)? Maybe their school does some kind of after school sports program.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Your boys weights don't sound too bad. I'm guessing if Adrian is 255 then Simon and Andrew are somewhere close to that too.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx They used to complain all the time about the trip to school but the last four or five months I haven't heard anything from them about it. They are constantly tired around the house. There's a lot of 'mom can you get this', 'dad can you do that'. We have a ground floor apartment so there's no stairs. I haven't seen them do any stairs in a very long time.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx If I am seeing the right picture (which I think I am), your sons are definetly bigger than mines. How easy is it for them to do simple things like that walk to school? Do they get tired from light physical activity (walking around the house, stairs, etc)
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx sitting on a bed
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx I just finished with the doctor, she said that Adrian is 5'9.5 and is 255 pounds, Ben is 5'3 and 186 pounds and Matthew is 6'0 and 170 pounds. Not really suprised but the doctor and I are concerned about Adrian's weight. I was told that Adrian does have a respiratory problem which is caused by the excess weight, and can be reversible with weight loss.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Is he sitting on a bed with flower print sheets? Or is he standing up?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Simon and Andrew both wear 50/32 (with the leg length hemmed) and 4XL tshirts. Thompson wears 44/30 with XXL shirts. Search google images for morbidly obese teen. There's a boy a little ways down with blue shorts on (you can barely see the shorts). That's about the size Andrew is, Simon is a bit smaller but not much.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx What size do your sons wear again?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx I thought about doing that today after the doctor. I took them into the city to have a Dad sons day since I was off and I told them I have to make a stop. Walk into my doctors office and told them that they were seeing a new doctor, just for a quick checkup. Let's say this morning was a show.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx My wife has taken the boys shopping for some new clothes for the summer break. All their summer clothes from last year are far too small and they've been complaining of tightness in their new clothes for a while.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx I see the picture, the article said that the boy was 14 stone (about 200), so your assumption was right. I am currently at the doctor's with my sons. I'll give you an update once I find out.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/28/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx It's really hard to tell if they are the same sort of size as Christie but they are at least close enough that if that is obese, they are too. The picture I found that sort of resembled Thompsons size was a before / after picture of a boy with green shorts on (before) and then black shorts (after)
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx I will try and run my sons over to the doctor tomorrow as I am off work, just for a physical (won't tell them though) so I can see an update.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Are your sons similar in size to Chris Christie?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Can you describe the picture, preferably what he was wearing
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Based on the picture of Chris Christie I'd say my boys are definitely obese. I found a picture on the internet when I was googling weight loss surgery thats very similar size to Thompson but I cant post links on here.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Google Chris Christie before weight loss surgery. To be completely honest, your boys do sound quite large. 250 wouldn't be that terrible if they were taller. Personally, since you say that they wearlarger clothes than you and you say that you are around 300, I would say that they are closer to 300.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Oh, well how do I figure out what kind of frame they've got? From my descriptions how big do my boys sound? Do the weights I've said guessed sound reasonable?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Like for example New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. I (and numerous others) would consider him obese. Or Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Everyone is different but I would think if your are overly large (fat not muscle) for your frame and height. For example, Adrian is heavy for his frame and quite wide and looks considerably heavier than his frame would suggest.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx What makes someone look obese? Morbidly obese?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx We've tried a few times but they are very resistant and I'm not sure why. Andrew especially digs his heels in and we don't push it too far as we're far too busy to try and make it work for him.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Adrian looks obese but Benny just looks a bit fat

Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Do your boys look obese?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx The doctor wasn't sure what the cause was. Only the older two have asthma and that developed after we moved and was part of the reason for the doctors visit in January 2013. I have no idea how I would get them on the scale or even where the scale is! I dont think I've seen it since we moved, no idea if it even got unpacked.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx I am a very visual person. Adrian's belly is about a quarter of the way but he is wide. Benny's is aboutbthe same but he is not wide. Is the asthma weight induced (weight caused) or has it been since birth? Is there anyway you can get them on a scale or take them to a doctor, because even if they don't look obese, there can be underlying complications.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Even if my boys are 'morbidly obese', which they don't look, all 3 of my boys are in great health. No issues at any of their checkups except asthma. Certainly they are not candidates for diabetes or cholesterol or joint issues.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Sounds like my boys really are bigger. All three have large love handles. Simon has very large man boobs that are kind of cone shaped and Andrews are still large but more shaped like large rolls of fat. Thompsons are medium sized. No idea how many inches their bellies hang over their pants (how did you work that out?). Sitting down Andrews belly is a bit over half way to his knees, Simons is around the same and I'd say Thompsons is about a quarter. All their belly rolls wrap around to their backs as well.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Being a hundred or more pounds overweight is a big health issue and morbid obesity can lead to diabetes and joint damage to name a few. Can also lead to respitory problems, high cholesterol. Source: nyu health
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Adrian's belly is quite large, he does have man boobs. He does have large love handles (patch of fat just above the waist), stomach hangs over pants about 4-5 inches. Benny belly is large but nowhere near Adrian's. He has small man boobs but large love handles. Stomach hangs over pants maybe about an inch and a half at most two.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx So morbid obesity is just related to how much they weigh? So its nothing serious then like health issues or anything.

Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Yes Adrian and Benny both have stretch marks. Adrian a whole lot more than Benny. I was out in the back yard on Saturday and they were shirtless sitting on the lawn chairs eating. Adrian's stomach literally spilled onto his lap. My wife was grilling food on the other side of the yard (maybe 20 feet), and when I called for last plate Adrian ran over and by the time he got there he was red faced and panting heavily, took the burger and sat on the grass and ate the burger in two bites.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Morbidly obese? What's that? So my boys are fatter than yours I guess...
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Adrian, being 5'9 and 245 (appx) pounds has a bmi of 36.2. Benny, being 5'3 and 175 has a bmi of 31. Matthew's I think is 21. He is like a bean pole! Anything over 30 is obese and 40 is morbidly obese (university of Rochester website)
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Do your boys have stretch marks?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Its pure fat. During the heat wave when they had their shirts off their whole bodies were wobbling and rippling with every step. Their bmis are: Simon 45.7 (assuming 250) Andrew 48.8 (assuming 250) Thompson 45.4 (assuming 210) Not sure what that means for them. How does that match up with your boys? In terms of seasoning for food we already add plenty of salt to things to make them taste better. Didn't matter how much I added to that microwave meal it was still terrible.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Eh, just put a little bit of salt and spice on the dinner. My wife always said to me, when we were back in Scotland, "when ye make haggis just put every spice in the cupboard on it and it taste only half bad"! I do have to say her Puerto Rican gravy on haggis was good! But on the other hand I just looked up the averages for 14 year old weight, 105-125 pounds. I think your son might be a bit towards obese..... I suggest you look at a bmi calcuator. Results can be shocking. Does he have a bit of muscle or is it pure 250 pounds of fat?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx ive tried the healthy microwave meals at work and they taste disgusting. My boys health is fine and they eat a lot of bacon. Thompson likes to joke that if it isn't greasy it isn't food worth eating!
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx My boys are not obese! I'm sure I would know if they were.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Angus, have you tried to do one of those healthier microwave meals? I know you stated that you are tired when you get home, just throw it in to the microwave and dinner is ready in less than 5 mins with no effort. All that beef and bacon every day isn't good for your health regardless of weight.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx I just don't want it to get to the point where Adrian is hitting 300 by the end of the summer and Benny is hitting 250. I can only imagine how gym would be then...
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Angus, the number may not sound bad but if Simon is 5'2 and 250 pounds, he is quite obese. Now on the other hand, I know Adrian is larger than all of them and is obese himself.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx Sounds like yours are probably bigger than mine. Mine aren't all that overweight I think.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Adrian is 16 5'9 and I think somewhere between 240-250 pounds. Matthew is 15 6'0 and 160-170 pounds. He was 200 but came down. Benny is 14 5'3 175 pounds. In september Adrian was at about 185 and 5'8, Benny was 145 and 5'2 and Matt was 5'11 and 200 pounds.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx No idea. They never said and I didn't want to embarass them by asking. Are your biys bigger than mine?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Angus, when you say that they have bended and broken school furniture, what type of furniture? And is it grade-level or younger like something for a 2nd grader. The chair that Adrian broke was in the after school watch in my office. So embarrassing.....
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx Yes I think they need to lose weight. I have no idea what their eating habits are like. They eat and snack a lot when im not home. They might eat more in thr summer but I doubt they will go out to the mall. They are too lazy for that haha
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Do you think that they will gain over the summer holiday? That is my biggest fear, and with how they eat, especially now that they can go to the mall and eat at all times of the day.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx How are your sons eating habits on a daily? Also, do you think they need to lose weight?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx probably all 200 - 250. ano way they could be 300!
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Angus, you had mentioned previously that your two oldest sons are your size, do you think that they are around 300 as well?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Angus, I know that you can't get your sons on the scale but knowing how they look and what they were, how much do you think they weigh now? (Rough estimate)
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx yeah quite a lot of complaints. They never talk about gyn. Its a taboo subject in our house.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx Angus, do your sons complain about diffulcty to exercise (out of breath quickly, joint pain, etc.)? Also, how is gym? Do they say it is physically demanding?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx They were already bigger at that weigh in than i thought they would be, they'd gained a bit since September (probably about 20-30 for my oldest two and and about 10-15 for my youngest) when we moved. Doctor didnt mention the weight gain either. We've gotten so busy lately there hasn't been time to take them in for check ups (plus they've been pretty resistant to going). They haven't had any sickness or anything so theres been no need for emergency appointments.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Angus, so based on the doctors results in 2013, this weight gain of approximately 70-100 pounds is recent (span of a year and a half). Have you noticed if their eating habits have changed from there on? Were they more active back then? Because their weight back then would be noting to be concerned about.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx My boys only exercise is walking to and from school and gym class. At home they are in their rooms on their computers most of the time, except when we do family time and we are all watching tv or out at a resturant.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Our school doesnt do anything like that as far as I know. At least the kids have never mentioned it. Last time they were weighed was over a year ago at the doctors (January 2013). No concerns were raised about their weight then. Simon 5ft, 180 Andrew 4ft10, 155 Thompson 4ft6, 129
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Angus, also do you know of your sons last recorded weight from the doctor, school physical- if they do that in your district, or other source?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/27/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx In my school district, they are starting a new "healthy lifestyles" program which is a waste of tax money (I sit on the board), and time. That's why the nurse gave me a little nudge. Their allowance isn't much but it is spent on that dollar pizza. Are your sons extremely sedentary?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I don't know if they're the largest or even close. It's not something that gets mentioned. They love the school food, but honestly can't say I know much about it. They each get an allowance to spend as they want including on lunchtime food and we don't really police how they spend it (besides drugs and alcohol, etc.) so as long as they're not asking for more from us its up to them to be responsible. I do know that the school food is fairly cheap - about $2 per item and they said its got all their favorites - nachos, chilli cheese dogs, fries, gravy, burgers and pizza. Simon and Andrew have both mentioned bending or breaking school furniture, but as I said, never mention teasing.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Are your oldest kids the largest in the school. A few weeks ago the nurse mentioned something about Adrian being ome of the largest in the school.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Benny and Adrian have friends, Adrian is bigger than them , but I think two of Benny's are the same size or larger. But, jocks and jerks will tease.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx My kids take the city bus to the high school but they switch in the center of town. At the switching point there is numerous fast food joints, especially the infamous $1 pizza. I do have to say it is good! I know they go there a lot. As with the kiddy furniture, I know Adrian has broken a chair or two (they have 235 pound weight limit). I think that is where the teasing comes from. How is lunch at their school (food line or bagged lunch). I know Adrian and Benny have put on a few pounds from that lunch line
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx No teasing that I know of. Both my oldest two have friends who are on the large side too but they are by far the biggest of their group. My youngests friends are a bit pudgy but not especially large. My oldest two have mentioned a few times that they can't wait for high school so they dont have to deal with the 'kiddy furniture' because they're too big for it.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx My boys walk to and from school considering its about a block and a bit. there's only a 7/11 and a pizza place on the way but I know from the amount of big gulp cups and pizza boxes in their rooms that all 3 are frequent users of both.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx How are your kids at school? Do they talk of getting teased? Benny has mentioned it a couple of times. It is cruel what they can say.....
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx My eldest sons have always been a tad bit overweight maybe 15 pounds, but in September '13 we moved to a new town (not far about 15 mins away) and we both took on second jobs as adjunct professors, limiting our time home. We are in a larger town and we live near the city center (more access to food), this may have been a cause for the gain.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx They've always been bigger kids but they started really packing on pounds these last two years. Right about the point that we moved and my wife and took on busier jobs. I didnt really notice or think much of it until we had a hot spell these last few weeks and their tops came off. I'd never seen so many stretch marks before especially on my eldest two.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx They order the same thing every evening so I've got it pretty well memorized. Baconator, chilli cheese fries, large chocolate shake. No idea what the calories are. We dont count calories in our family.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Have your sons always been big or is this recent?
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx My cooking is not exactly healthy. That baconator may be less calories......
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx When I cook, I cook big. I am from the south and we love food and will cook for at least 10 people when there is 5 of us.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Good for you cooking. I can't honestly remember the last time either my wife or I cooked.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Dinner usually for us is chicken, fried or baked, or beef, and Spanish rice. Since my wife works late and now its in the low season I will try and cook. In high season (both work late) it can be McDonalds or some form of takeout everyday.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx No i dont. like i said, I can't even get them on the scale. Food is such a big part of our lives. We basically live for it. Anytime anyone is upset or we fight as a family, we have a big meal and its all better. My kids must have heard me say a million times 'there's nothing that can't be solved by food'
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Do you have any idea on how to get them to lose weight (including mines)?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Dinner for us is normally Wendys. All of my boys love baconators, they've got a huge thing for bacon right now. I pick it up on the way home and we have some family time watching movies and eating dinner. Then normally a few snacks after that and take in turns to decide who has to get up to get the next snack.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Angus, I know how it feels. Both my wife and I work from dusk to dawn and when we come home we aren't cooking. At most a meal that takes 15 minutes! When the dietician told me her idea I jumped right on board. But I didn't realize how my wife and I feel after we come home most days.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Probably. I asked my wife what size they wore and she said they both wear 50/32 which she hems for them and 4XL tshirts. I wear 46/32 and XXL t shirts.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 67.80.152.xxx Angus, I am assuming that your two oldest sons are about 250 pounds (give or take)?
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx I dont think those kinds of things would work for us. We're all too busy and so exhausted when we get home the only thing we want to do is sit on the couch and enjoy some good food not go for a walk!
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx I spoke to the dietician today and she said to cook healthier meals at home and to start doing a family exercise such as walking after dinner. She also mentioned not to not mention the word diet and to sit down with the family and talk about a lifestyle change for all of us. I think that this will work for my family. She also talked about snacking in limitations and eating to feel satisfied. Since I will be home I will get them to be more active. I think that this is a good approach.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 209.121.225.xxx Weight isnt something we talk about in our family. I don't know if they even feel they are heavy.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Have you mentioned anything to them about their weight? Going to try and speak to dietician today.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Simon is 14, 5ft2 and around my size, though not sure of his weight. Andrew is 12, 5ft and around my size as well. Thompson is 11, 4ft 9 and i'd say about twice the size of most of his friends. I'm 5ft7.5 and about 300 pounds myself. My wife is about 220 pounds. All 3 of my boys routinely get a D in gym, which is minimal effort shown, turns up, has gym kit and gets changed but that's about it.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx I try to cook healthy foods, but my wife (new) is allergic to everything under the sun, so she cooks most of the time. She likes to cook Spanish/Puerto Rican food, which is not always the healthiest. During the busy months at work (Sept,December, and April), I bring home takeout about 2 to 3 times a workweek (M-F). But my wife, my other son Matthew, and I workout a lot so it does not affect us as much.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Angus, about how large are your children? Adrian failed gym this year because he refused to change in the locker room. Benny, on the other hand, I think he got a C in gym. Ben will participate in gym, just not as much as the other kids
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx They hate going to the doctors too. They're all short for their age and my two older ones are already around my size, maybe even a little bigger. They pass gym every year barely and they dont do any other exercise than that. I think they said they do gym 1.5x a week (one full class and one class that's half the time). My wife and I both work a lot so I'm not all that sure of what their eating habits are like. They're on their own for most meals except on weekends when we're so busy its normally just eating out or take outs.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Hi Angus, well Ben had a little cold in January (nothing to go to the doctor about) but I took them all in and they updated records (height, weight, etc). Now they won't step on the scale at home
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Sure. How did you manage to convince your kids to get weighed and measured? Mine won't get on the scale. Their weight is like mine, all in their stomachs and chests. I have to admit I'm not very active and probably do not lead a very good example.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 172.56.34.xxx Hello, Angus Thank you for your response but my personal email is down and I can't use my government work email. Can we post via this forum. Thanks Mark
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/25/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Forgot to give my email - angusyoung688@yahoo.ca My boys are 14, 12 and 11 and I honestly don't know what they weigh but they are all on the bigger side of things. I dont have a lot to do with their clothes buying so I couldnt tell you their sizes off the top of my head but they all love food, especially junk food. I got to admit I'm a junk food junkie too and dont set a good example.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/26/14 - IP#: 172.56.35.xxx tha Blanch, the reason it might be the passing of my wife (really ex), but we were separated for years and they were not that close to their mother. They were sad for a few days but were not depressed. I spoke to the doctor today and she said that the gain is unhealthy, need a diet (basically telling me the obvious). I went to the gym with my sons this morning. Adrian had to sit after 2 laps on the track, and he could not do more than 3 pushups. Ben was a bit better but got winded after a short time. I mentioned what the doctor said, and Adrian flipped out, telling me he wasn't fat. Ben just listened and said he would think about it. I have no idea what to do about Adrian.
Reply from Angus, Child's Age 14 - 06/25/14 - IP#: 173.180.241.xxx Hi Mark, don't have long right now but will try and post something longer later. If you need someone to talk to about your sons' weight, email me. I have sons with weight issues as well.
Reply from Blanch - 06/25/14 - IP#: 71.1.153.xxx Good Evening, this is Blanch speaking. Have you at all considered that your wife's passing may have contributed to their weight gain. Perhaps they are feeling depressed? It's my opinion that you take them to have a long talk with their physician and have the physician come up with a diet and exercise plan for your boys.
Reply from Mark, Child's Age 16 - 06/22/14 - IP#: 208.54.37.xxx Sorry, I made a mistake. My son Adrian wears a size 40-42 (more 42) pants, so I guess his weight is closer to 240. In Jan, I think he wore a 38-40 (more 38).
