Talk Kindly to Yourself
You hear all the time,” you shouldn’t care what other people think about you.” It’s difficult not to be hurt by unkind things other kids say or do. But what is just as hurtful is some of the things you think about or say to yourself. This is called “self-talk.”
Take some of your bad thoughts about yourself and turn them into good thoughts or “self-talk.”
For example, you may say to yourself,
“I can’t lose weight. I will never be thin.”
Thinking this is telling yourself you failed. If you keep saying this to yourself over and over you will believe it is true.
Try and think of how to turn this sentence around to say something positive: “I may not have reached my goal weight, but I have made healthy changes and I feel good about that. I am going to take this one day at a time and I am proud of myself for trying.”
You listen to yourself all day. Tell yourself you can do something and believe it is true. You are your toughest critic. Did you know what we think people are thinking about us is usually negative and not true, mostly because other people are thinking about stuff going on with them. Trying to figure out what other people “think” about you is like trying to read their minds.
Practice positive self-talk everyday with everything you do!
