Just got back from a trip to Disney World with my 2 boys, Leo (almost 12) and Lane (10). I was shocked at how fat they are compared to other kids I saw. Last night I weighed them. Leo is 225 and Lane is 137. I decided today that the diet starts today. I need to get 100 pounds of fat off Leo and 60 pounds off Lane. They both wear jogging pants all the time because nothing else fits because their bellies and rear ends are so big. Tonight we had pizza, but that's the last regular meal until they get down to the normal size they were a couple years ago. After they go to sleep I'm clearing out all the cookies, chips, candy, etc. and from now on its skim milk, salad, no daily fast food stops, no evening ice cream treats, no extra money to buy food at school. To give you idea how fat they both are, Leo is 5 feet even and Lane is 4'8. No video games unless they lose 2 pounds a week each. Wish me luck!

Yes, it can be hard seeing them outgrow clothes at such a quick pace.
How did the appointment go?

They've been growing so fast that buying clothes is hard and expensive. They each have a pair of jeans and 2 polo shirts for school, and the rest of the time they were sweatpants and tee shirts. Leo can wear my trousers (size 42) but they're so long on him they look funny. Jeans can be turned up.

No probs huffing/puffing when we walk at the mall. Leo wears men's size XL polos, men's size 42/28 jeans with the legs turned up. Lane is boys size XL polos and boys size 20 husky jeans with the legs rolled up. At home they were sweatpants (stretchy).

Jesse, do your boys have any problems in any activity or daily routine like finding clothes or do they start huffing and puffing after little exercise?

We're all sedentary. Boys played soccer until age 9 but lost interest. I drive them to and from school because they'd have to cross a busy highway if they walked. They play video games, read. They have friends from school I work from home (an accountant), go to office half day a week.

Yeah, always overweight everybody here too. Never bothered me. And, it is impossible to force a teenager into losing weight when he does not want, and I don't want to nag all the time without any effect. Are your boys active or sedentary?

That's our situation too Dave. I'm overweight and my late wife was always heavy (200 lbs when we married. Both boys were 8+ lbs at birth, then slimmed down at age 1, then ballooned up to their present sizes around the time each turned 10. Never bothered me until I saw how massive the oldest was getting.

Yes,that sounds about correct. I am myself overweight too, at 6'5 and 270 lbs. Never had any issues in the family except more or less everybody being overweight.

Dave, so your 13 year old is about 55 lbs overweight and the 15 year old is about 75 lbs overweight.

The youngest one is almost 13, he is 5'6 and about 195 lbs, the other is 15, 6'0 and about 255. Nothing really extreme, but definitely not average. My youngest has gotten a lot taller recently, but I am 6'5, so I guess they will both get quite tall.

Thanks, Dave. Can you tell me the ages, heights and weights of your boys?

I have not bothered much, as they are happy kids, we have a great relationship, they srw good students and have lots of friends, not the unhappy stereotypical fat kid, but of course I see that they are getting bigger, and that it is maybe enough soon..

Hello! This sounds a lot like our days - mine are a bit older, so they get to school and back home on their own, but it often happens that they drop by some food place on the way home, then also have dinner at home, and the regular evening snacks.

Dave, they go to a small charter school so they bring lunch from home: sandwiches, cookies, fruit. After school i pick yhem up and we stop for fast food because they say they're hungry and it gives us a chance to talk, then home and dinner. Evening is homework, then TV and snacks then bedtime at 10.

Here's what they are yesterday. Cereal/milk, pop tarts, OJ for breakfast, lunch; sandwiches, milk, soup, fruit, dinner: take-out Chinese (family meal for 6 for the 3 of us. Snacks: cookies, chips, sandwiches, microwave pizza rolls.

What do they (and you) normally eat in a day? What food and which amounts are typical? Would be interesting to hear the outcome of the appointment. I am kinda in the same boat with my boys, but have not done anything so far.

I gave up on the diet plan a week ago. Was getting nothing but arguments from my boys, they even refused to eat. I know I gave up but a good relationship with my boys means the most to me. They're all I have. I have a doctor's appointment for them at the end of the month.

Also it's good that you've started the diet with them. So is the whole household together on the same page as far as the diet food is concerned?
It is difficult to get rid of their unhealthy food habits but once you start don't give up, it takes time but gets better. Also how did they gain the weight, how has their diet been up til now?

Reply from Sarah, Child's Age 12 - 02/02/19  - IP#: 39.44.202.xxx
Jesse, why don't you try swimming with them? It is effective for losing weight and also doesn't take much effort as running, if that's hard for your children.
Also try joining a gym, or maybe doing treadmill if they can't do other exercises, treadmill is really good to lose thigh, tummy weight.

Thanks, Dave, didn't think of that. You mean I might be hurting my boys? I'm desperate, Leo looks like a bowling ball of blubber. And right now they're refusing to eat, say I'm trying to starve them.

Good luck! Have you planned the diet together with a physician? Might not be a good idea to force a low-calorie diet right before puberty sets in.. Usually recommended is only to avoid further gain.

..so running is out of the question. Lane just hangs out with Leo (18 months older), has turned into a couch potato and eats as much as Leo. Both are refusing to eat our diet food, saying they're hungry and I'm trying to starve them. Battle of the wills, me or them.

Sarah, both boys played soccer until each was 10. After that, each started gaining weight fast. The only exercise they get now is walking home from school (3 blocks). They go to a charter school, no P.E. As far as running goes, Leo carries a lot of his weight on his hips, butt, and legs...

How is their activity level? Do they have trouble running and exercising?
