Lifting weights to lose weight? |
=> Hi, I'm 17 and I way 256 lbs. I'm 6ft 2in. I usually lift weights more than exercise, but I have been trying to exercise more often. I try to stick to diets, but then I always fail some how. I have always been over-weight ever since I can remember, and I would Love to change that, but I need help because I don't know how, can you help me?
|
Lifting weights is a great way to increase your muscle mass. It's true that muscle ways more than fat but it also burns more calories than fat. You have the right idea by adding aerobic exercise to your plan. Aerobic exercise is activity that gets your heart rate up. It is important in building a healthy heart and it burns calories to help you with weight loss. It is recommended that people get at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week.
Eating healthy is also an important part of reaching a healthy weight. Don't think of food in terms of diet but rather eating habits. Eating habits are developed over time and they are a way of eating that you can stick to for the rest of your life. Think about the way that you eat now. Are there any changes that you can make? For example, if you tend to overeat after school, try using that time to workout. Adopting healthy eating habits involves changing behaviors that you usually do and replacing them with healthier ones. |

We are glad that you want to lose weight, but remember you need to do it for you, not to get a boyfriend or to look like a movie star. Our eating habits have been shaped over a lifetime. It is unreasonable to expect to change them in a month. Weight loss takes time, but it can be done. It is recommended to lose no more than 2 pounds per week.
It sounds like a lot of times you overeat because of how you are feeling (bored, lonely). One way to help you lose weight is to try and replace eating with healthier alternatives. To start, I wouldn't keep track of weight as much as behaviors- the weight will follow. Have you ever kept a food journal? Try writing down what you eat for a week. Also try to notice any feelings you have and right them down too. This will help you identify feelings that lead you to overeat. While you are doing this write a list of things that you can do instead of eating. Some examples are; color a picture, work on homework, call a friend, go for a walk, write some emails. Try doing these before you eat. It's hard to do at first, but it gets easier with time and before too long you are doing these activities instead of eating.
Another important thing is to not compare yourself to others. You are unique. Take a moment and think of all the women you know. How many of them actually look like famous people? I am guessing that not that many do. Famous people have to work really hard to look the way they do, and not all of them do it healthily. Even after all they do most get airbrushed anyways. You are you, and that is a good thing. Look for things in yourself that you like. Accepting who you are is an important part of achieving a healthy weight. |
What can I eat to lose weight if I don't like vegetables or salads. |
=> I am 14 my height is 5'7 I weigh 190 How can i drop to 135 or 140 an lose inches in my thighs ? please help me! i cant eat many vegtables because i never had since i was little ! And i have never had salad . My mom an Grandma say i use to love them but i dont like the taste of things like that so can you help if you can email me back thanks!???

The 2 biggest things you can do to lose weight are eating healthy and exercise. Are there any vegetables that you like? If so, eat those because some vegetables are better than none. Have you tried the low-fat salad dressings? They taste pretty good and might help you like salads more. Eating healthy means more than eating vegetables though. Ask your mom and your grandma to bake foods instead of frying them. Trim the fat off your meat and take the skin off your chicken. These are all small changes that make a big difference! If you go back for second helpings make a goal to stop doing that for 2 out 3 of your meals. Replace chips, candy and soda for things like low-fat string cheese, low-fat yogurt, or low-fat pudding. This will help you decrease the amount of fat in your meal plan and increase the amount of calcium you get. Calcium is important for strong bones.
Are you involved in any physical activity? If you can't go to a gym try walking or getting an exercise video. Start out slow and work your way up to your goal. Remind yourself, that something (no matter how small) is better than nothing. Ask your mom and your grandma to support you while you try to reach a healthy weight. Maybe they will go for walks with you or stop buying "junk" food. |
Is body type important? |
=> People are always talking about how knowing your body type is important to loosing weight, but I can't tell what body type i am. Is it that important and, if so, how can i tell for sure?
|
Knowing your body type can mean a couple of different things. It could mean knowing your frame size (small, medium, large) or it could mean knowing if you are an apple or a pear.
Measuring your frame size is a way to help find a healthy weight range for your size. For example, 2 people could be 5 foot 3 inches and weigh 130 pounds. For a medium frame size this would be a healthy weight, but for a small frame size this might be slightly overweight. You don't need to know this to lose weight. Another way that you can tell if you are in a healthy weight range is having a BMI that fits into the healthy weight category.
Being an apple or a pear is a way of saying how you carry your weight. People who are pears tend to have bigger behinds and hips. People who are apples tend to have bigger bellies. The take home point of knowing this is that no matter how much weight you lose, you can't change your body type. If you are a pear you'll always be a pear. One way to tell what you are is to look at your mom's and grandma's body type. Do they carry their weight around their hips? If so, chances are you will be a pear. If they carry their weight around their stomach, chances are you will be an apple. |

We are glad that you choosing to lose weight for health reasons. It is important that you lose weight for you, not for boys, your doctor or your friends. I work with people who have diabetes. There was this study done called the Diabetes Prevention Program to find out if losing weight and exercise helped prevent diabetes. The results were so amazing that they ended the study early. They found that modest weight loss and increased physical activity does help prevent diabetes even better than medication could! Modest weight loss is losing 5-7% of your body weight. For example is you weighed 200 pounds, 5% of that would equal 10 pounds. To calculate this number, multiply your weight by 0.05 (200 * 0.05=10). To calculate 7% of your body weight, multiply your weight by 0.07. The exciting thing about this is that losing 10 pounds is much more achievable than 50 pounds and it still helps prevent diabetes!
The physical activity goal of the study was to get 150 minutes of exercise a week. You can do whatever you like. Most people in the study walked. 150 minutes of exercise during a week can be 30 minutes 5 days a week or 20 minutes everyday. If it is hard for you to exercise that much at one time you can break it up to 10-15 minutes twice a day. |
I am sick of being made fun of... |
=> Ok i am 12 years old im 5'5 and i weigh 210 puond im sick of bieng made fun of and i just wanna be around 97 pounds or liter than that im always gettin made fun of im always putt down about my stretch marks all over my boddy i always try to diet but i never keep up with it how can i loose alot of wieght in like 3 weeks or sumthin please help me i rele could use it :-(

We am sorry that you get made fun of. That must be difficult for you. If you want to lose weight and keep it off losing weight fast is not the way to go because it means that you will be more likely to gain it back, and then some. Weight loss is a long-term process. The weight did not come on overnight, and it won't come off that way either.
We encourage you to begin exercising. It doesn't have to be running a marathon. Start with what you are able to do. If it is walking, start with that. Even just 10 minutes of walking will help you reach your goals. How can you improve your eating habits? Are the after school munchies a problem for you? Make a list of activities that you can do instead of eating and go down that list before you eat. If you end up eating after you finish the list it is still an improvement because you are teaching yourself to wait instead of giving in.
Another thing we encourage you to work on is your self-esteem. It is important that you feel good about yourself. Make a list of things that you like about yourself. I know it sounds corny, but read that list to yourself everyday. It helps you to remember the positive things about you when you are bombarded with negative comments from others. If you have trouble making a list of positives ask your family or friends to help you. |
What about pills? Exercise bikes? |
=> Hi im 16 and im about 5'9'' and weigh 317 lbs or so. I want to lose some weight before school starts but it starts on september 3rd and its already august 10th. I have tried to lose weight before but i always find myself not suceeding. I have an exercise bike in my basement, I dont have much money for pills or anything like that. I was just wondering what I could do?
|
Congratulations on your decision to lose weight! Use that exercise bike of yours even if you can only do it for 5-10 minutes at a time. It is better than nothing. We don't recommend pills at all, it is a waste of money. Diet pills are a gimmick that companies use to make money. Think about it, if they really worked there wouldn't be so many people in the United States with weight problems!
What kind of goals are you setting? It sounds like they may be too high if you are never succeeding. Try setting more realistic goals like, "I am going to use the exercise bike for 5-10 minutes 4 days a week for the next 2 weeks." This is still a challenging goal, but it is achievable. Try doing the same with a food goal. What area in eating are you most ready to work on? Is it portion sizes? Not going back for seconds? Increasing the amount fruits & vegetables you eat? Chose what you are most ready to work on, and remember to stay positive so that you don't give up! |
Is skipping meals a healthy way to lose weight? |
=> I am 197 pounds and 5'9'' tall. If I excercise for two hours and don't eat breakfast of dinner every day could i get down to 150 by may?
|
It is not a good idea to skip breakfast and dinner! You need food for your body to work correctly. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives you brain power for school and also speeds up your metabolism, which makes you burn more calories. I'm not talking about a bacon & eggs breakfast, but something simple like yogurt and a piece of fruit. Dinner is also important to keep your metabolism up. Another down side of skipping meals is that it sets you up for a binge. Our bodies need food, and if you deny yourself eventually you will give in and end up eating more than if you had just eaten a balanced meal!
One idea is to set smaller yet challenging goals instead of big ones that take a long time to reach. This helps people to feel more successful when they reach the goals and helps from feeling too overwhelmed and quitting. Instead of the goals of 2 hours of exercise, and losing 47 pounds, try setting goals like losing 10 pounds and exercising 4-5 days of the week. These goals are much more realistic, but you still have to work hard to achieve them. When you reach them, they give you a sense of accomplishment. Just a reminder, safe weight loss is no more than 2 pounds a week. |
How can I lose weight if I can't exercise? |
=> im 13, im going into the 8th grade and im 185 1/2 pounds. i dont know what to do. it is so hard to stop eating and my parents wont let me walk anywhere by myself or with friends and i cant run and i wish i had a dog to walk but i dont have one or neither do my neighbors. instead of excercise is there any other way to lose the weight? please please help, my doctors yell at me and so do my parents? i am very desparate. and fruits and veggies are gross and some im allergic too, please help i am really really really desprate just to lose something, and if i dont eat anything when im hungry i get really dizzy and get a severe migrane. thankx

It must be frustrating to not be able to go for walks. Exercise and eating healthy are key to losing weight and keeping it off. If you aren't able to exercise outside have you considered buying an exercise video to do in your house? Maybe it could be an activity that your friends and you do together. One thing I like to do is go to the public library and check out some exercise videos. This way I can try them out and decide which one I like best before I buy one. If you can't buy or rent a video try doing sit-ups and leg lifts. You can also increase your steps in your daily routine. Take the long way to the cafeteria; use the stairs instead of the elevator, add P.E. as an elective class.
Are there any fruits or veggies you like? If so, try adding those to your meal plan. Fruits and veggies are so great because they have lots of vitamins and are filling without a lot of fat and calories. Have you tried cutting what you eat in half? If it seems too overwhelming, try just one meal that you can cut in half or make a pact with yourself to not go back for seconds. Any little thing that you can do will help you to reach a healthy weight! |
Teens and losing weight |
=> Why is it so hard for a teenager to lose weight?!
|
I think it is hard for most people who need to lose weight regardless of age! Some of the reasons it might be especially hard for teens is that your body is in the process of changing from a child into an adult. For girls, the body begins to develop hips and store fat so that a girl becomes a woman who is able to handle pregnancy. Another reason is can be hard for a teenager to lose weight is that it is very common to eat a lot of “junk food” during this time like pizza, soda, chips, ice cream, and fast food. It’s hard to say no to these foods when everyone around you is eating them. If this is true for you, I encourage you to talk to your friends and ask for their support while you are trying to lose weight. Maybe they would be willing to eat healthier foods around you. |
