I'm 14, 5'8", 185 lbs, 34 waist, 22% bodyfat. What are reasonable goals to commit to in these areas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ashley is right. You can't survive on less than 1200 calories a day. You can seriously hurt your body if you eat less than that. The best thing to do is exercise off the extra calories with controlled moderate exercise. You should eat about 1800-2400 calories a day (girls lower, guys higher) then exercise for about a half an hour. If you notice, most skinny people are in sports or some type of group or class that keeps them moving. Skipping meals slows your metabolism, while eating right and exercising keeps your metabolism running the fastest it can. Just think of it as a burning fire. A fire needs fuel and oxygen to stay bright and burning. We get fuel from the food we eat and oxygen from exercising. Please take care of your body, you have to live with it for a life time.

I have an extremely overweight friend, who dosnt even seem to notice how overweight she is. She eats a lot and all the time...i dont know how to tell her that she is overweight, and shouldnt eat like that. She dosnt even care that people tease her constantly, and that its harder for her to do certain things. I feel real bad for her, and i feel bad myself for not doing anything. But, i dont know how to tell her. PLEASE reply with any ideas. I need to tell her someway, and soon.

To j_lynn: PLEASE DO NOT TELL ANYONE TO EAT SUCH A SMALL AMOUNT OF CALORIES!!! It is unhealthy and dangerous and you have no right putting the lives of teens in danger! I am not trying to be mean to you, as I am sure you have the best of intentions. I am merely trying to tell you that what you are telling them is very dangerous. I am glad it turned out ok for you but to tell other teens to try it is just plain dangerous. Also, you don't have to use the word hell in every message you send! Enough already. Please, sweetie, help others by giving them healthy tips and email me or send me a message if you want to. Ashley tulipgirl1@hotmail.com

Actually, I HAVE talked to my doctor about weight loss. You, j_lynn, are right. 500 calories is not starving yourself, yet. But if you continue to stay on a diet which only allows the intake of 500 calories a day, you will not last long. Your body will not have the energy it needs. You will become weak, tired, and irritable. After a week, at the least, you could go into starvation mode. That is not a healthy, or effective plan.

This message is for VineVixen17 and to all the other teens out there...please don't ever try anorexia or bulimia. Those aren't diets. They are eating disorders which can eventually kill you. And to VineVixen17, I remember exactly how it was to be in your shoes. I am also 5'5". I now weigh 130 lbs and I am so proud of the body I now have. I am healthy, I eat right and exercize, and I am in my target weight range. Please don't try to starve yourself just to be a size 2. At your height, a size 2 would look anorexic. I will help you in anyway I can but you have to promise me, and yourself, that you will only try healthy ways. Are you drinking a lot of cokes? Sorry, I am from the south and in the south, when we say coke we mean any kind of soda. Cokes are high in sugar and sugar turns into fat if it isn't burned off. ANyway, email me or send me messages here and I will support you in way I can. Take care and good luck! Ashley

J_Lynn, Eating less slows down your metabolism. You don't want to lose it too fast because you can gain it back faster. 500 calories is not even close to being enough. One piece of cheese pizza is 500 calories and I dont think thats all that everyone wants to eat every day. Please look at your diet plan a little more carefully. Starving yourself to 500 calories is kind of like being anorexic. My friend died from that diease and I don't want to see that happen to anyone else. So if you are reading this please don't take J_Lynn's advice.~Kelli~

People, People. what the hell is your major malfunction??? YOU ALL ARE DOING IT ALL WRONG. TRY THIS: 500-1000 calories a day. 15-30 min of some sort of exercise. Do this for about a month. JUST TRY IT FOR CHRIST SAKE. This worked for me. I have battled for 5 years with my weight and self esteem. I am real curious to see if what worked for me will help others. Remember to count your calories. Write them down. Plan your meals ahead of time. Stick to chicken istead of red meat. If you guys need help post me up a message i have tons of answers. Lotta love- l8ter

I posted this earlier as a reply, but I wanted everyone to see it because I think it is an important message. Take it from me, guys...I was an overweight teen but I am 25 now and healthy. If you must have a soft drink have only one every other day and make it diet. 6) Last but most important...Don't lose weight just to gain acceptance from friends and the community. Real friends love and accept you the way you are and will support you if and when you decide to lose weight. Also, to those who are worried that boys will never ask them out, I worried about that too but, believe me, your time will come and the boys will start knocking on your door. Guys, I know this was a long message but please be careful, because you can really hurt your body if you don't know what you are doing. See a doctor and follow his/her advice. Email me if you have any questions. Good luck!!! tulipgirl1@hotmail.com (view less)

I have two friends who are both VERY overweight. Neither of them way more than 180, but they are both short. They both get made fun of, espicially one of them. The thing of it is, is that I know that they are not trying to loose because they are both getting bigger! And myself? Well, I have come to not even realize when I am full and don't need anymore food. :-(
