Hello. I'm new to this site. My daughter is turning 8 next week and is a beautiful, vibrant little girl. she is also a full head taller and considerably heavier than all the other children in her second grade class. She is 'big all over', not just chubby. She is very strong, and is muscular. In addition, she has recently begun pre-pubertal development (pubic hair, breasts beginning). Her self esteem is taking a nose dive and I don't know what to do.We did have her blood work done and the first time, it showed a TSH of 18...very high, apparently. Reference range says 4 is maximum. Other enzymes were all over the map too, apparently. Second and third rounds of blood work however seemed to normalize, and the pediatrician said not to worry, she is just in early puberty. Her enjoyment of life is really going downhill. She has decided she won't participate in a field trip to the swimming... (view more)Hello. I'm new to this site. Her enjoyment of life is really going downhill. She has decided she won't participate in a field trip to the swimming pool with her class tomorrow. Too embarassing, she says, with her "yucky hair" and her "fat belly". We tell her in a thousand ways how beautiful she is, and we can't get through. The messages she gets from everywhere else are stronger, I guess. She is also a perfectionist, and compares herself poorly to others at times. How does one put a child on a diet? The pediatrician said she would never want us to do that, although she said our daughter was definitely overweight. Our child is active...2 dance classes a week, gymnastics class, walking to and from school...what else can we do? I think she is lovely, and strong, and powerful. She only wants to look like the petite 7 year old girls in her class. Ideas? Thanks. (view less)

I am very concerned about 2 of my 3 children. I have a 9 year old who is a stick... and then I have a 7 year old who weighs about 110lbs and a 5 year old who weighs about 95lbs. I am not sure how much they should weigh or what I should try to get them down to. I don't know if I should just leave it alone and watch what they eat or what. Please help

My daughter has been steadily gaining weight over the past year, despite being involved in sports and eating seemingly normal meals. I haven't said anything, but the other day we split up at the mall and reconvened an hour later. I sat on a bench and saw what I thought was a middle aged woman approaching me. I was shocked when I put my glasses on and recognized my own daughter---her hips and belly look enormous, there isn't any other way to put it.any hints?Sharon, Daytong

My daughter is 15 years old and has always been a little on the chubby side. We visited the doctor in June and she weighed in at 192 lbs. We decided it was in her best interest to loose some weight, and she did. In December we went to the doctor again and she was at 150 lbs. I was so proud of her. But now lately, I've been noticing that she's slipping a bit. I can see that her stomach hangs over her jeans and it didn't before. I asked her if she's weighed herself lately and she said she has. She told me that she's at 166 lbs. She's put on 16 lbs in the past 3 months. I'm a bit concerned and I voiced my concern with her and she told me that she'll get back to the 'healthy stuff' but for now she wants to eat some 'normal' stuff again. I really don't see how this has anything to do with the weight gain. She can eat 'normal' stuff, but not all of the time. Should I be concerned that she's headed back to her first weight, or should I just sit back and let her handle this on her own? I think she knows what she's doing, but I'm not sure.

Reply from the comment from JAMES: you know james, my daughter would rather hear encouragement than a stupid comment. thank you for encouraging her, claire. when we went on this website and i showed her your message, it truly boosted her self-esteem. and remember parents, work with your children to help them reach their weight-loss goals.

stop calling your kids fat, ok! it isnt cool. they dont need to hear how fat they are, they need motivation. tell them how great they are, explain how much better they would feelif they were healthier "Your getting fatter everyday!" isnt a helpful comment, it gives a sense of no hope!

Hi, my daughter is 8, 4'2, and weighs 120. I am extremely worried about her health. I have tried to change her eating habits for years but she argues with me until we I give in. I have seen 3 doctors regarding her weight and they all said the same thing. She will stretch as she gets older and she will definitely grow into her weight. Well, I just don't see it and that worries me even more. I need help in order to help my daughter. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

I have two twin boys, named Nick and Alex. They look exactly the same and are very similar in personality. But there is one difference between them. Nick is 5'6" and weighs 130 lbs, which is healthy. Alex is 5'6" and weighs 195 lbs. I watch them eat, and oddly, Nick can eat anything under the sun, and will not gain an ounce. Alex can eat one cookie and gain 5 lbs. They both exercise the same amount, and they both eat alot. I do think that they eat too much, but how come Nick is so thin, and Alex obese, if they eat the same amount and exercise the same. I feel bad for Alex, being so fat. His brother always calls him fatso or fatty when they get in fights. I agree that he is too fat. His belly jiggles around and flabs over his pants, and he has so many fat rolls and blubbers. Help! I am overweight, and my husband is not.

Hey. My son is 4'7" and weighs 140 lbs. He is rather short, and is really overweight. He loves to eat in excess, cookies, cakes, fries, chips, and he hates to exercise. He stored all his extra weight in his abdomen and cannot do 1 sit-up. His stomach bulges over his jeans and he has huge lovehandles, underchins and cheeks. He really loves to eat. He can eat 3rds or 4ths at the dinner table and cannot go 1 hr without food. All he does is watch TV with his big belly hanging out of his shirt. I cannot find shirts for his width and height so he has to wear the biggest size, which are tight on him. The shirts are so tight that when he laughs his stomach jiggles out or when he coughs his stomach jiggles out. When Jason first came to my home, he was 6 years old weighed about 35 pounds. He was skin and bones and afraid of everything. The first few months J was with me, he shovled food down his throat, because he never knew when his next meal was coming. It took me about 2 years to open up and start enjoying life and being a kid. I that 2 years, he put on about 40 pounds. He was finally healthy. But then things started to change. His behavior abrupptly changed. We took him to the doctor and a physcologist. It turns out Jason has skitsophernia and suffers from severe depression. He also has ADD and BD. The physcologist says that Jason is using overeating as a defense mechinism, because of his past. Medacation has helped his behavior, and he is back to being happy. But the medaction also boosted his appetite. At 15, he wieghed 180 pounds, now at 17, he weighs 265 pounds. Jason doesn't seem to have a problem with being overweight, he has lots of friends and is always out having fun. So I haven't really been pushing him to stop overeating and maybe give up junk food, in fear of pushing him back into depression. He still goes to his pyschologist 2 times a week, and every once and a while she touchs his weight and possible diet plans. But he always tries to change the subject. He knows he's fat, he admits it. But he says it doesn't bother him. His gut is so big, he's got a nice flat chest, meaning no male breast development, just a big gut that hangs over his jeans. I'm going to try and take the junk food out of my house, but slowly so he doesn't really notice. But I have to try and motivate him to exercise. I was going to try to tell him the our computer "died" so I can get him off of games and the internet, but then he'll just go sit in front of the TV and play video games. Well, I hope I haven't bored you with my sons life story, but if anyone has any suggestions that could help me, I would apprieciate it. Thank you, Maggie. (view less)
