We are new to the site and love it so far. If you count calories, for exericse, where do you get a complete scale? Our Dr. said 30 min. of vigorous exercise per day. My daughter has maintained for 2 months and really wants to lose before school starts. Calories in -- calories out seems to be a good starting point. We don't eat fast food a lot so counting grams of fat and starches for home-cooked food baffle me. If you have anticipated from this message, I have been called "underweight" all my life so identifying for me is a problem. My daughter wants to look like me, which I DO NOT recommend. Encouragement or advise would be more than welcome!!

My 8-year-old stepdaughter is 4 feet tall and 125 pounds. This is a 3 pound weight gain in the two weeks since she was last with us - we have visitation every other weekend. While with us, I watch her food intake very carefully...even her 11-year-old brother tells her to stop shoving in her face. Her Dad (my husband) is completely embarrased to be seen in public with her. Bathing suit shopping is a difficult enough experience for most of us - we ended up getting a ladies size large tank suit for her. What concerns me is 1) the bio-mom doesn't think her daughter has a problem 2) both bio-mom and bio-dad are diabeticand 3) no one at school or church wants to step in and make a report of medical neglect. HELP!

Hey, I am a parent. I need advice. My step son who lives with me is very over weight. He is 16 and at least 75lbs overweight. His mother is also very overweight. They make fat jokes about their problem. That bothers me. I try to talk to him about healthy food choices and he says that he is just fine with the way he is and that they make jokes because they accept themselves. I don't think that is really the case. I think people make jokes about themselves when they are uncomfortable about themselves. Anyway, he just keeps getting bigger and I worry about his self-esteem and his physical health. How can his father and I talk to him about this and get him to open up?

Hi parents I am just a teen but I wanted to know your opinion. See, my mom, my dad, and I are all overweight, and my entire life they (and sometimes we) have been on some diet or another, but nothing ever really worked because we couldn't stick to it. I'm frustrated because my dad in particular is very overweight and I am concerned about his health and so is my mom, but every time we try to talk to him about it he just brushes us off. I love my dad very much and I want him to be around for a long time to come. How can I get him to take care of himself? I know I can't make him do it but is there anything I can do to help?

My 16 year old step son is extremely over weight. I would say at least 75lbs. I brought up his food choices today and asked him how he felt about how he looked. He says he does not care. I really think that that is a farce. He has no self-confidence, walks slouched over looking at the ground. Does not face people when he is in front of them.He lives with me and his father. Every time he goes to his mother's for a week or more he put on more weight. He has gone through two pant sizes this school year.At home we have healthy food and buy diet drinks but he has a problem with his portion sizes and on his own he chooses sugared colas. At his mom's he basicly eats all he wants and sits in front of the tv all the time. His mother also has a weight problem. They make fat jokes about their problem. I commented that I did not think it was all that funny to do that and he replied that... (view more)My 16 year old step son is extremely over weight. I would say at least 75lbs. Ok, sorry i'm not a parent (i'm 16). i'm sad and hopeless and desperate since all my family (me + mom + older sister) is overweight. the problem is, my mom doesn't care about it - she's extremely sedentary all her life and buys junk food too. she doesn't let me exercise too - says that looks are not important (maybe that's why my dad divorced)and i should focus on school and academics.i hate her 4 this - talk to her every freakin day- she doesn't understand. i can't do much against her, but she makes me wanna die. i'm very lonely and have no friends.i'm considering running away or going to foster home. plzzz help.

I have been reading some posts and there is something I have to say! PLEASE parents, when your children ask for junk food it doesn't mean you have to give it to them!!! It's so much better if you don't!!! It's helping them! I know (because I am a child myself) that when a craving comes to me, I will give up my diet any day for a burger and fries! And that's when kids need your help! Please don't give in to your children like my mum has for so many years!!! It'll only mean they'll love you for 10 minutes and hate them selves for 10 hrs!
