My daughter has been struggling with her weight for about 3 yrs now. Strangely she was an underweight baby and child until she hit 9, and I really don't know why. I've explored many reasons. She currently attneds the YMCA with me a minimum of 3 times a week, we are usually there 5 or 6 times, taking Sunday off. We started this 4 weeks ago, and she busts her butt, watches her carb and fat intake, and I can see her muscles toning. She however, is not seeing an "weight-loss" when weighing herself. She is 5'2" and approx 180lbs. She hates going to the doctor because he might weigh her, she "wishes" she would lose weight but isn't willing to commit to doing what it takes. I am so emotionally spent at this point, that I am asking any advice from you parents, before I seek professional help. I see her getting discouraged and withdrawn, and I don't blame her. I can keep a happy positive face for a while, but truthfully I am just as discouraged as she is. I too have struggled with my weight, especailly after my third child, and now that I'm 40 I just have to look at food to apply it to my hips. So you can possibly understand how I might not be the best person telling her to be patient, when I am just as impatient. Of course this weight is affecting her entire personality. She has an "I don't care" attitude about what she wears, how she looks, where she goes, if her room is a mess etc. My heart is breaking, please help! (view less)

My son is 9 years old and his doctor told me that he is overweight-he is 104 pounds and 54 inches. It is very difficult to teach him how to control his weight when I grew up with bad eating habits in my household. I have eliminated the fattening foods in the house and replaced them with lower fat ones. At one point he did lose 6 pounds, because every time he wanted to overeat I told him he had to go on the treadmill for 1/2 hour. I seem to have lost control of the situation(from being to strict?). He is very fussy with his food and very reluctant to exercise. He got in the "tv" trap and now it is hard to break the habit. I try to keep him active, despite his reluctance. I don't seem to get much support from the family-they disregard my concern and tell me that he's growing and to stop being so hard on him. I wish that I knew for sure that I was doing the right thing?

For the past 5 years my son has been battling his weight and cholesterol. We are currently in a fitness program and have just scheduled an appointment with a local nutritionist.I feel like I have tried everything in the past and am very involved in my son's regime.I have actually lost weight,as I am a few inches taller and weigh about 40lbs less. I will never give up as I have lost many relatives due to obesity related illness(i.e. heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure).Looking for some key advice that seemed to work for others regarding naturally lowering your childs cholesterol. Thanks!

Hello, I'm a stepmother of a 7 year old boy who is 3'11" and 62 pounds. At age 5 he was 65 pounds. It's been a struggle to keep his weight between 60-65 pounds. My thoughts have been that he could grow into his weight. However the struggle mainly stems from his grandparents and aunt and uncle whom he spends a lot of time with. I have talked to them many times about the importance of good healthy eating habbits, but they just don't seem to listen. They feed him food as though he is an adult man as well as unlimited amounts of high fat and sugar snacks. He has gained as much as 3-4 pounds in a one week visit with them. Any suggestions on how I can either accept this or get them to work with me instead of against me?

you should always include protien in your child's diet,(or yours) because when you exersise you will only lose muscle, not fat.

Thanks for the advice. I talked to my sons today and they decided to lose some weight. I also talked to my ex-wife and her husband. They said that the boys can eat whatever they want to. (her husband is 5'11" and weighs 607 lbs; my ex-wife is about 5'5" and weighs 402 lbs)

Hello. I have a big problem with my 4 boys. They are all very overweight. I got divorced 3 years ago and my ex-wife got married to a large man. They (ex-wife & new husband) are gaining large amounts of weight and I think it is taking a toll on my kids. My 13 year old is 5'4" and weighs 237 lbs (last year he weighed 180). My 14 year old is 5'5" and weighs 291 lbs (last year he weighed 240). My 21 year old is in college and has put on so much weight. When he left to go to college, he was very thin (140 lbs.) and 6 feet tall. Now he is going to be a senior and weighs 358 lbs! The sad part is about my 16 year old son. He was 14, 5'9", and 150 lbs. When he got his work papers, he got a job at McDonalds. Now, 2 years later, he has put on 160 lbs and looks horrible. They don't even care that they are obese. My 14 year old son ate a whole gallon of ice cream in one sitting. Their stomachs aren't the least bit muscular and they flab over the top of the pants. I noticed when they first started gaining weight that they had rolls on their stomach when they bent over or sat down. Now they are there all the time! They just walk around the house without shirts on and when I ask them "why aren't you wearing a shirt?" they say "because they are uncomfortable". I am really stressed about my sons and if anyone has any advice, please comment. (by the way, I am 40 and weigh 195 lbs, less than my youngest son) (view less)

I went up to her an hour later and only to find that she had food in her room and was stuffing her face again. Well we talked again and this time i think i got threw to her only that evening something embaressing happenes to her we were sitting in the garden and then calissa broke the chair when she sat in it, she started crying and said she will do anything she can to lose the weight so i hope all goes much better from now on. Sorry i took up so much space but this is the only place where i can tell poeple about my feelings. (view less)

Can anyone tell me how much a 16 year old boy, 5'9, should weigh? Also, how big should his waist be? My son weighs 180 lbs and wears size 36 pants. I know he's overweight, but I'm not sure just how much. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
