My daughter will be a freshman this Fall, and she's beginning to take an interest in clothes. Although she is overweight, she is very confident, self-assured, good natured, and she has many good friends. She'll very infrequently make remarks about her "skinny" friends which leads me to believe that her weight does bother her. She's never admitted it to me. There is one area in her life that absolutely bothers her: there are no "cute clothes" in her size. She's now wearing a 16 petite (or short). There really is nothing for her in teen shops. It is so sad to go shopping with her, we end up in the Misses Plus sizes sometimes. I assume my daughter is not the only experiencing this, how do you handle this? I'm tempted to hire a seamstress for next year's formal dance at school. Any suggestions?

I just found this site while looking for height/weight charts for kids. I found one at slimkids.com, and it said my 46.5 inch tall daughter, who weighs 60 lbs is underweight. I can tell by the rolls on her belly that isnt true. This site says she is overweight-over 95% for her age and sex, but should she be compared to her age group when she is as tall as a 6 year old? Let me know if I have this right! Also, any advice would be appreciated.. I intend to nip this in the bud before the problem gets out of hand.. I, too, was a heavy child and still struggle as an adult. I am glad I found you!

Me again, does anybody have any input on childrens weightloss programs like committed for kids or slimkids, Do these programs work??? We live in a very hick town near Branson, MO and the fitness clubs won't allow children in the fitness areas due to insurance reasons.

Does anyone know how to measure your body fat percentage? My son wants to get his down to 10%, but he wants to know where he came from. Thanks to anyone who has any info.

I have a 13 year old daughter. She is overweight at 165lbs. She started having a weights problem from around the age of 8. She's taken a lot of teasing about this and usually just laughs it off. Lately though it's not been so easy. She is desperate to lose weight now and I am doing everything I can to help her. What makes matters worse, is that I have no idea where to start. I have never had to diet, so it's hard for me to know what to do. Luckily this web sight has been a big help for both my daughter and myself. For the last two weeks we've worked together, planning what food to buy and eat. We've done well and have cut out all the chips, soda and candy. Also checking labels for fat content etc. Every evening we go out and execise for an hour. My daughter weighed herself after a week and found that she hadn't taken off any weight at all. Very dissappointing for her. All I could say was it will take time. It's very hard for my daughter to accept this as being a teenager, she wants results now! Does anyone know what weight loss she should expect after a few weeks?

Hi everyone. I was wondering if you could help me, my daughter is 13 years old and is constantly made fun of about her weight. She isn't really that heavy for someone 5foot 6inches 118lbs isn't a lot considering how muscular she is playing all the sports that she does. She would like to lose about 10lbs of fat just to get into better shape for her sports. I don't want her to do it alone because i don't want her to do anything unhealthy. But I'm not too sure what to do myself, can anyone help?

I have a question. My son is 5'6" and he weighs probably about 170 pounds. Well, we're trying to add on to our house (without using credit), so we don't have a lot of extra money. To save money, my son started wearing his youth pastor's clothes when his other clothes got too small. I thought this to be a good idea at the time, but it seems that I was wrong. The things my son has told me that he says almost make me mad. I have seen him come up to him and jiggle his belly and say something like Hey man, they feed you at home? I never really thought much about it, I figure he's just playing. But my son has told me that he'll ask him if he's still fat enough enough for his clothes. That's not even the half of it. My son once spent the weekend at his house, and they went to Cici's Pizza for dinner one night. Doug said something about my son not being able to fit into his clothes anymore if he... (view more)

Help! My son really needs help with his weight. He's 5'5 and weighs about 210 lbs. He eats constantly. Everyone at school makes fun of him, so he doesn't have any friends. He just sits in front of the TV and stuffs his face. He wears size 36 pants but they're so tight that he has to suck all the way in and have me help him button them. We're going shopping for new clothes tomorrow because all of the clothes he has now are too tight. I often mention weight loss to him, and he acts interested, but then I catch him in the middle of the night eating a whole pizza. I've talked to his doctor, but he doesn't know what to do. He doesn't like fruits or crackers, the only thing he ever wants to eat is pizza, hamburgers, etc. I need help. Can ANYONE help me?

My daughter is 7 yrs old, weighs 115lbs. I am so worried about my daughter I know the weight bothers her sometimes but she doesn't say anything. She can't tie her own shoes very well if she does she says it hurts her tummy. She has a lot of friends but kids still tease her at school. I don't keep junk food in the house at all, but I do always try to have a lot of fruit like apples or oranges she know that if she is hungry at an unappropriate time she can eat fruit for a snack. I have been recently been diagnosed with diabetes, and I am worried that she is at risk for getting this disease due to her weight. I have trouble finding clothes for her, and K-mart doesnt always work. I have to buy sweats because she can't wear jeans because I can't find her size. I anyone can tell me anything I would appriciate it.As far as excersise she is active but just started within this winter. Her... (view more)

I read the message put on by the person who had the research thing to do. I do agree that just because you loose weight will not help the teasing at school. I have done a lot of research on weight problems. I have found web sites that say it is O.K to be over weight or "pleasntly Plump" as they like to call it. I am happy that people can learn to love their body no matter what. But the fact is that this is not a healthy way to live. Your child may be O.K now. Most of your problems are clothes, teasing, and friends. When their bodies are done growing at 17 or 18 the real adult problems set in. I was overweight my whole childhood till I started getting sick a lot. A doctor said "you know, a 5 lb. loss would help" That 5 turned into 25. I am hardly Kate Moss, but I am happier, healthly, and I sleep better, and have more energy. please, don't over look this problem. There is... (view more)
