Our daughter is 5'7" and 230 pounds. She is VERY active in sports (currently in her 6th year of playing in 2 basketball leagues simultaneously, she has played 2 years of starting offensive & defensive line boys football and she pitches softball). She has been menstrating for almost 2 years now and wears a size 11 womans shoe - so she is a bigger girl- but I can't lie to myself or her anymore...she's extremely overweight too. A few times I've caught her sneaking food and found 3 candy wrappers in her room. I've yelled, threatened, offered to pay her for each pound she looses and even enrolled her in an overweight kids program. I just don't know what to do anymore. She agrees with me but she continues to just eat more and get heavier and heavier. She's such a pretty girl and last week for the first time a boy at school really said a mean thing to her. She gets straight A's; but her... (view more)Our daughter is 5'7" and 230 pounds. She gets straight A's; but her self esteem is diminishing. She will only wear large t-shirts and jeans to hide her "real shape". Even the team t-shirts she wears for sports she always requests a larger size. I don't want her to gain anymore weight and want her to loose - but she needs to motivate herself but in the meantime she puts on more weight! Any suggestions... (view less)

I really don't know what to do, or what to say. I just spoke to my son, he's 14, is 5'8 and weighs more than 250. Last year the same time he was "only" at 180, which was also to much for him. He gained around 70 lbs in one year and is really fat now. I've told him again and again that he should stop eating that much. I try to give him only small portions, but he buys himself sweets and fast food everyday. I can't do anything to stop that.Today I heard from one of his friends, who is also very overweight, that they have a competition - who has the biggest belly among those friends. There are two or three more, all of them overweight. I couldn't say anything! I really don't know what to say to my son. So I asked him about this "competition". He just said: Mom, look at me, I'm winning! Look at this big belly!I think it's awful. What to do? Please help!

You guys, like I relize that your kids are over, but don't force them to do things eventually we figure it out, if you to take them to a Doc. other wise leave them alone they don't wanna be told what to do, and maybe buy healthy food and say if you wanna live under this roof you will obey by my eating habits, I mean if they wanna live in a box let them, Its there problem not yours, so just tell them and be mean if you have to, if its a problem do something about it, I mean don't be afrid these are your kids and your letting them control you, your the parents don't be shy to your kid DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! Let your voice be heard to these kids!!xoxo :: A Surfer Guys Dream!!

I raise my seven year old daughter Lisa alone. She always has been overweight but I never knew how much she weighted because I always knew it was to much and I didn't want her to suffer by knowing her weight. I'm also overweight, in fact I'm obese, and weight a bit over 280 pounds. On Friday we went to the doctors office. He demanded that Lisa should be weighted. I was shocked at the outcome: Lisa already weights 152 pounds. Lisa was also shocked when the doctor said that she weights so much and wants her to loose weight. That evening she said to me that she thinks she is really fat and that she feels ashamed about it. She has a big flabby belly that hangs way down over her waistband. I'm now afraid that she will become obese just like me. What can I do?

I am divorced and I live in California. My daughter and ex-wife live in New York. My ex-wife feeds her like no tommarow and ignores the fact that she is totally unhealthy. From June till August she was staying with me. When I first picked her up in June, I could not believe my eyes! She had gained so much weight since I last saw her (which was a little less than a year ago). Her stomch was buldging over her jeans and her arms had stretch marks on them. Of course, I didn't say anything, but it hurt me so much to see her so unhealthy. When I needed to send her to a local day camp and they needed her medical form I called my ex-wife to send it up. She was only 5'5" and weighed 243 pounds. Those numbers jumped out at me, I would never guessed she weighed over 200 pounds, more than me! She gained 39 pounds in one year. Is there any way I can help this issue thousands miles away? I've discussed this with my ex-wife, but she weighs proably over 400 pounds so 240 doesn't seem like much. She also got really offended when I told her that Jenny looked un-healthy. Thanks in advanced! --Mark (view less)

Hey Everyone. I have three sons. One is 17, on 14 and the other 10. All three are overweight, if not obese. I don't know what to do. My oldest, Kyle is 18 and is 6'0" and weighs 288 lbs. He has been fat his whole life. A years ago, for his freshman year, he weighed 310 lbs and was 5'8". I rationed the junk food and put him on a diet, and he lost 40 lbs over the next three years. Then in senior year, he started going to parties and distancing himself from me. He has gained 18 lbs since Septemeber. His weight problem started at age 6, when he broke his leg. He was in a cast for months, and his weight had gone up and bad eating habits had been ingrained. His weight has just climbed ever since. His stomach has a sag over his size 44 pants, and his lovehandles redefine 'spare tire'. My second oldest is 14 and weighs 257 lbs. He is 5'6". His weight problem has only been recent. He was at a... He was at a healthy weight until he tried out for football. He wanted to be a linebacker and the coach wanted him to gain 30 lbs. He did gain thirty pounds, plus 100 more! He wears size 38 pants and his stomach is gigantic. Last weekend he went for a final swim with his friends before the winter and I chaperoned. I almost fainted when he took off his shirt. Chunks of fat were just hanging and jiggling all over his body. He is substancially larger than all of his friends, and they call him Moby. Lastly, my youngest son is 10. His weight is pushing 150 lbs, and he is rather short, just 5 feet. Most of his excess weight is stored in his abdomen, which bulges out of all his shirts and over his pants. He eats as much as his 14 year old brother, which is bad, and knows the tv line up like the palm of his hand. He cannot go an hour without eating something, and when he attempts excersise, he tires out and huffs and puffs in a few minutes, so he returns to the couch. Please help me. I know the 18 y/o is almost out of my hands, but I need help! We are a rich family (I'm a judge), and the boys have every kind of food on hand. There is a McDonalds down the street, and when they can walk, they go pig out on deep fried potatoes. Neither my wife or me are overweight. Help!!! (view less)

My child has been overweight since he was about 9, but lately i think its been getting out of hand. Let me start from the beggining... A few years ago, he had ballooned up to about 260 and he was about 12, so we decided that it would be in his best interest to go to Weight Watchers. He went, and lost about 40 pounds in a few months, at the time he had also been involved in football, which got him a lot of exercise. After he lost all his weight, he stopped going to weight watchers, and the football season ended. All was good for a little while, then the next year came along and he didnt want to join football. All he did was sit on his butt, watch tv, eat, and get fatter. He gained all of his weight back, plus more. At 15, he has reached his top weight of 310 pounds. This is getting out of hand. He huffs and puffs up the stairs and cant do anythign physical for very long. I NEED HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM!! IF YOU CAN HELP, PLEASE EMAIL ME AT TROMAN2345@yahoo.com

Hi. My very handsome son, who was the envy of most people is now becoming fat. He is obsessed with food.He can eat a full adult meal and still say he's hungry.bed times have become a war because he wants more food before he sleeps. His behaviour is oppossite to what it used to be. Until a couple of years ago, I was worried about him being underweight. I want to control it before it gets out of hand. He seems more hungry just before bed time. Any suggestions?

My daughter is 10 1/2, 5' 1 1/2" and 134 lbs. Her BMI is in the 97th %ile. Blood tests have ruled out underlying causes. We are generally a nutritionally sound family - we drink only skim milk, we don't eat in front of the TV, etc. We indulge sometimes but for the most part stick to healthy foods. I'd like to know if your tween girls have had success in slimming down - either by losing weight or by maintaining weight while growing. TIA!

My nephew is 5 and is 47 inches tall and about 75 lbs. He has a high self esteem and thinks he looks great. He is very proud of his tummy. He get plenty of excercise and is very active, he does eat alot and has second and third helpings. He currently wears size 10-12 and has to have the pants legs hemmed up.I think it is most important to have good self esteem and not to drive your kids crazy about what they eat. I love my nephew and have never told him that he is too fat. I always say that he is cute and the best nephew. When he comes to visit I do try to make healthy food available and limit sweets but in a nice way, such as apple slices for snack and thing like that.
