My daughter is 7 years old and she's about 4'6 and weights 135lbs. I don't know any other kids her age that are this tall or this heavy. She weights more than I do, and she can eat more than I can. How do I explain to her that she is too big without hurting her self esteem? I don't know what kind of diet to put her on or how to explain to her that she can't eat all the things she wants to. Its so hard to explain health issues to a seven year old. I have always been thin, and that makes it harder to understand why she is so big. I worry so much about her, she hates to exercise and when she does her breathing gets heavy and her heart rate goes way up. any advice would be great, I don't know anyone else in the situation to talk to thanks

samantha is now trying to lose weight, because she went to this overweight discussion, and it showed her all the negatives about being overweight. Her and her sister have been excersizing together, and samantha has lost 3 pound in a week so far. I am very glad that she is taking this seriously.

Ok, my son had his appointment with pediatric GI and the preliminary dx is 'Fatty Liver' he has to have more blood tests done and a renal ultra sound to confirm this diagnosis. I am told to watch what he eats and put him on a low fat diet. What is a low fat diet for a 4 year old. how many grams of fat should we limit him to, this dr wasn't sure. it is very hard but i think if we stick to our guns he will do ok at the dinner table. he cries and gets very very upset when told no to certain foods, yesterday I cleaned out the pantry - if its not here he can't eat it! any word of encouragement or advice anyone?? thank you

Hi, I am an undergraduate in a health communication course at UNC Charlotte. I am currently working on a project for the course in which we interact via chat groups and bulletin boards to apply the concepts we are learning in the classroom to real life situations. My research group has chosen to focus on families with children who are overweight. We would like your permission to observe the communication here and ask some questions of anyone willing to help us. Thanks for your consideration. Please post and let us know if you would be willing to participate. Thanks so much!

My daughter is very interested in the Yoga Booty Ballet series. She is overweight, but not obese, but lacks will power when it comes to food. Has anyone tried this exercise program, have helpful hints and/or tips? She loves to dance, loves music, and wants to try out for cheerleading. The problem has always been her weight, i.e.: cut from the dance squad because the outfits would not support her "cleveage"....straight from the judge's mouth and written on paper. Talk about a self-esteem let down. She is not responsible for what was given to her in that respect, but there are more weight loss issues than just that. Any input would be appreciated before she spends her hard-earned $$ on this.

My granddaughter is 7 years old and she's 4'6" and 114lbs. No one else in either side of the family is big. The doctor ran several blood test and everything came back okay except she has a high testosterone level. He is sending her to an endocrinologist. Is there anyone else with anything like this out there?

my son is 9 and 113lbs. He's extremely active has been wrestling for 4 years. Practice is 3 days a week and about 40 minutes of the two hour practice involve running and heavy exercise. He has been very concious and has been eating less. He typically eats healty things like chicken and fruit and doesn't drink soda. He does have a lot of muscle mass and is quite fast for his size, but definately carries extra weight. What do think?

Listen this is just a quick helper. When I was in 8th grade i was gona proably become overweight. I dont like to admit it to anyone now but yea it was true. So in any case I started running and that really shed the pounds, then I wrestled and then forget it it was great it got rid of all the exess body fat. Well here is my sugestion. I know it may be hard for your kid to do this. But try and get them into a sport they really love. Trust me it works. I mean I just ended wrestling like 2 weeks ago and its sad but I all ready have a tummy again and have gained like 10 pounds. But thats why im going to do spring track. By the time it starts I know that Ill be getting pretty chubby, but litteraly 2 weeks after I start it will all be gone. So just try and get your kid into somethign they really love.

Hi, my son is 4 years old. At his last well check, (last week) he weighed 68 lbs. I insisted that the dr do some labs to see if there was a medical cause for him gaining 8 pounds in the last 6-8 weeks. The dr reluctantly ran some tests, his fasting blood sugar was 100-Normal! then the office called and told me the dr wanted him back because his liver enzymes were elevated. What does that mean. Is it common in overweight kids or is there something I need to worry about while I wait till his appointment of Friday? I worry about my baby and have looked up all sorts of horror stories online. Any words of advice would be great!
