There is some good news about my son. He got moved to another class because of the bullying and he's doing much better. He's even made a real friend who sticks up for him when anyone teases him about his weight. He's much happier now that he doesn't get teased so much at school. He's also only gained two pounds since last month so the weight gain may finally be slowing down. He is still having a hard time adjusting to the physical burden of the extra weight. Carrying an extra 62 pounds would be hard for anyone. It's especially hard for a kid who's almost the shortest in his class and was never overweight before. He complains a lot about being tired and uncomfortable. Now that he's not gaining weight as quickly I hope he will have a better chance to get used to it. I also hope he will grow into the weight in a few years. Does anyone know how long it normally takes for someone to adjust to gaining a lot of weight?

Hi my name Jess, my son is 12 years old and was very over weight and as a result of this was subject to relentless persecution, not only by his class mates and frenamies but also society on the whole. After a horrible experience at a the pool last summer I decided to take a stand. I also decided that I wasn't going to use a scale because of the long journey that lay ahead of us and the shame that is caused by the act of the "dreaded weigh in". Just by luck I happened to catch The Discover Channel doing a piece on a really amazing product that has helped us a great deal. It's called the Quantum Scale. What makes this so fantastic is that never displays the users weight ! It secretly records the starting weight at the beginning of your diet and will only show a loss or gain but at no point ever displays how much you weigh. It is inspiring and a great motivator. This is a product that is based on the power of positive thought, removing the negative energy and building a person back up one day a time with positive reinforcement. We love it ! Hello, My daughter is 6. She is obese…as confirmed by her doctor. She is also tall for her age. We have seen the dietitian several times and done food diaries. She is very active but loves to eat. We can control portions when she is with us, but we work full-time and she started 1st grade so she has to learn to make better food decisions on her own. She has a wonderful self image. I absolutely love that she knows she is beautiful. She has many, many friends and has always been popular and well-liked among her peers. I don’t want to do anything that will put any negative self-esteem thoughts in her head. Her older brother is a tall, skinny kid. We emphasize eating well for proper health for both of them, not for weight control. But I know I am more careful about what I put in her lunch and give her as a snack. My husband and his mother have Type 2 diabetes & are overweight. Since her Dad and Grandma have weight-related health issues, I really want to / need to help her now. She is not a vegetable lover and calls me out when I sneak purred veggies into sauces or the like. Any suggestions on how to get her to make better food choices without hurting her great self-esteem or how to make veggies more palatable for her without sneaking (since she can taste that anyhow & won't eat it)? I really appreciate any responses. As I am sure you all know since you are in a similar position, it is so frustrating trying to help without harming. (view less)

My son takes medication for his behavior problems. The only prescription that works causes terrible weight gain. He started taking the pills a year ago and gained 60 pounds in that time with 25 being gained just this summer. His behavior is good now but he's miserable from the weight. He keeps begging me to stop the medication but we tried that and his behavior problems came back worse than ever. He's short for his age and wasn't fat before so his friends all tease him for getting so fat. They call him pregnant and fat factory. The weight isn't proportional on his body. It's gone mostly to his belly and that's why they call him pregnant. He's always exhausted now from hauling around the extra weight and he complains about his belly being uncomfortable. He says it's too heavy when he's standing up and it feels squeezed when he's sitting down. He had to quit soccer because it's too hard to... The weight gain was supposed to level off but it hasn't yet. He has to stay on the prescription or his behavior will go out of control, but I hate seeing him cry from the teasing and always being so uncomfortable. He's dreading going back to school tomorrow because of what his friends will say when they see he gained so much more weight over the summer. I need advice to help him deal with the emotional and physical discomfort. (view less)

alright, i've stopped posting about my daughter, and for the last time, i accidentally wrote 20 when i meant around 10. maybe the scale was bad, it happens. and no, i am not sammie's brother, and i'm sorry if i make him sound so wonderful, but he's my son. and he takes care of his body. but sammie is a beautiful young girl, and i will love her no matter how much she weighs. she is losing pounds rather fast, yesterday we cleaned out the kitchen of all unhealthy foods, like one of you suggested. so please, this website is for helping your kids, not for gossiping about me. i'd rather you solve your own issues, and this is one of the reasons i've stopped posting. and as for calling me a troll, i still understand that sometimes, people are like that. also, i talked to sammie about the preteens board, and she said that she was going to ask the other kids to do the diet plan to see if it works,... Hey Taylor I beleive you.John is probably a troll or maybe brother of the real Sammie on preeteens board.I mean, common, the way he described her brother(himself) so beautifull and perfect he is and talking nasty things about poor Sammie, like shes Jubba the Hutt or something. But beleive me,after a week of binge eating i gained 10 lb so its possible to gain weight that fast. But i daubt Sammie gorges herself every second like "John" described.

for your information, we have taken her to the doctor, and it is just an increase in appetite, he said probably do to puberty. i now realize letting her eat so much from a young age wasn't a good idea, and maybe i eggagerated on a few things, but for goodness sakes, taylor, what have i ever done to you? i appreciate your help, and am trying to be as nice as i can to you, but really, it does no good to fight. like you wanted, i have stopped posting, and have gotten my daughter real medical advice, and she is doing great. so, there is no need for you to be angry with me anymore. can we finally call a truce, and leave it at that without another fighting comment, please?

Hey Taylor, I think you are insecure and need to get your own life. Stop blaming people for making things up. You have to remember nothing is impossible. I've gained 10 pounds in a weekend before. Not really that hard. So let off and stop bashing people.

taylor, what i meant by act, is that we all know the opinions of our kids, and how they will feel. for instance, if one of the children who likes to eat goes on here, they will probably encourage the parent to let their child eat anything. and as for my daughter, she has not eaten this extreme her whole life, just now, i guess because of puberty or something. i do not sense the reason of why you continue to argue about my posts. truly, if you have a problem, maybe you should not go on this board. my daughter has a serious weight problem, and i am trying to get her help. i mean this in the kindest way possible, that i am not trying to start a fight, and i realize neither are you. some people really do create fake posts for some sort of cheap thrill, or something. also, my daughter has been changing her mind alot about what she wants to do, i assume she might have gotten a little teased at school, but she likes to eat. thank you for your concern. -john-
